What kind of sparks will be ignited when Lingnan intangible cultural heritage techniques, including Guangcai ceramics, jade carving, Cantonese embroidery, and paper cutting, collide with the paintings by Qi Baishi, a renowned traditional Chinese painter?

On April 28th, the exhibition combining the art copyright of Qi Baishi with intangible cultural heritage innovation was inaugurated at R Parc Pearl River. More than 90 artworks created by over 50 intangible heritage inheritors, covering 26 intangible heritage projects, were showcased at the exhibition. It not only serves as a commemoration of the master painter at the 160th anniversary of his birth, but also an initiative to promote the revitalization and utilization of Lingnan intangible cultural heritage with copyrights. The exhibition will be held until May 19th.

The event also features an authorization ceremony where the Qi Baishi Art Center and the direct descendants of Qi Baishi (Qi Yanfang, Qi Yanqin, Qi Yanxi, Qi Fu) granted the copyright resources of the master's works to the intangible cultural heritage inheritors.

After six months of preparation, over 50 intangible cultural heritage inheritors at the district, municipal, provincial, and national levels, such as Tan Guanghui, He Lifen, Tang Jinquan and so on, created over 90 artworks based on the elements in Qi's paintings. The artworks cover 26 intangible heritage projects, including Guangcai ceramics, woodcarving, tie-dyeing technique, Guangzhou stucco relief and silverware.

New Guangcai ceramic works such as "Joyful Shrimps" and "Accomplished Prosperity", created by Tan Guanghui, a representative national-level inheritor of Guangcai ceramic techniques, were brought to this exhibition.

Tan said, "Qi was famous for painting shrimps. As an inheritor of Guangcai intangible cultural heritage, I integrated Master Qi's painting elements into the Guangcai technique, as a way to inherit the artistic essence of this renowned artist of previous generations." In the work "Accomplished Prosperity", Tan combines the "shrimp" element with lychees and banana leaves. "I referred to Qi's techniques in painting shrimps while integrating the decorative techniques of Guangcai to enrich the entire artwork."

"People always say that Qi Baishi's paintings 'suit both refined and popular tastes', which is also a characteristic of Lingnan culture. Qi has visited Lingnan area before. The artistic features of Lingnan artworks, such as the close connection with daily life and the emphasize on the visual presentation of colorful ink, have influenced Qi's artistic creation," said Qi Fu. He also expressed that by granting the copyright resources of Qi's works to ICH inheritors, they hope to have opportunities for cross-domain cooperation and mutual exchange with these inheritors, so as to allow more people to understand Qi's ink paintings and their artistic essence.
