On the evening of October 12th, the Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts Center was packed for the performance of the refreshed Cantonese opera "White Snake." This performance was a highlight of the 15th-anniversary celebrations of Cantonese opera's designation as an intangible cultural heritage, offering a dazzling display of Lingnan culture that delighted the Beijing audience and sparked a new wave of enthusiasm for Cantonese opera. Over the past ten years, this opera, which resonates with younger audiences, has become a beloved classic, performing almost 300 times in more than 50 cities across the globe, including Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan regions.
The story of the White Snake is a timeless classic on the opera stage, with the tale of Bai Suzhen's love story enduring through the ages and embodying the East's romantic aspiration for love that transcends time and space.
On stage, Zeng Xiaomin's portrayal of Bai Suzhen is that of a modern and empowered woman who dares in action and emotion. Her performance not only moved the audience with the depth of her emotions but also showcased her exceptional martial arts skills. From sword fights to acrobatics on a wire, and the dazzling "spear-kicking" technique, Zeng Xiaomin pushed the boundaries of traditional opera combat, using her water sleeves to battle eighteen Arhats single-handedly, winning the audience's admiration with her performance.
The October 12th show attracted audiences from Singapore, Malaysia, Mexico, and beyond, along with students from universities in Beijing, local residents, and devoted fans who had traveled far to catch a glimpse of the renowned performers. "White Snake" was praised for its freshness and the different surprises it offers with each viewing.
"Although I am not familiar with Cantonese opera, I was still attracted by its unique rhythm and tempo. The atmospheric music was perfectly aligned with the narrative and the characters' emotions, making the entire show incredibly captivating," said Mr. Chen from Singapore.
