Guangzhou's Ocean World is making a grand return on June 25th, featuring a stunning blend of technology and art that promises a deep-sea adventure for all. Visitors can immerse themselves in the cyberesque panoramic Underwater Tunnel, witness the mesmerizing Fish Storm in a pillar-like aquarium, stroll through the 18-meter-long Coral Gallery, and marvel at the enchanting Jellyfish Realm, the Space-Time Tunnel filled with dynamic and colorful light effects, and the Relief Sculpture of Ocean Time Squad.
For many long-time residents, the Ocean World Aquarium in Guangzhou holds cherished childhood memories. Located within the Guangzhou Zoo, the aquarium has been a staple of the city since its opening in 1998, boasting nearly 26 years of history. It has served as a crucial base for popular science education in Guangzhou and Guangdong Province, delighting countless families. However, due to aging facilities and changing demands, the aquarium closed for renovations in 2018. Comprehensive upgrades began in early 2023, focusing on modernizing facilities and enhancing visitor engagement and experience.
The aquarium covers approximately 16,000 square meters, with a total building area of about 20,000 square meters. It is divided into four thematic exhibition areas: Rainforest Discovery, Fantasy Realm, Future Sea, and Elf Bay. Highlights include five interactive projects such as Dolphin Encounters, Playful Sea Lions, Heart of the Ocean, Shark Ballet, and Mermaid Tales. Visitors can also enjoy six beautifully crafted photo spots and ten must-visit attractions, all designed to offer a deeper understanding of the ocean's mysteries and wonders.
The aquarium houses over 300 species of marine life, including nearly 10,000 fish. Notable exhibits feature the nationally protected green sea turtles, the "pandas of the sea" spotted seals, the "canaries of the sea" beluga whales, the powerful freshwater predator arapaima, and the popular Pacific bottlenose dolphins.
Notably, the Ocean World introduces a new IP team, the Ocean Time Squad, featuring characters like Jiu Jiu the Dolphin, Boom Boom the Seal, and Wei Wei the Beluga. These additions bring a youthful and approachable vibe to the aquarium.
Guangzhou's Ocean World is committed to environmental protection and education. Several environmental display boards educate visitors on marine conservation, encouraging greater awareness and action to protect the ocean environment. The aquarium also prioritizes the welfare of marine animals, upgrading tanks for belugas and sea turtles, adding natural lighting, and improving breeding standards to promote their health and reproduction.
