On June 21st, the Guangdong Museum will host a major art exhibition titled "Art of the Roman Empire: Exhibition of the Ancient Treasures from the National Archaeological Museum of Naples."

This exhibition, a collaboration between the Guangdong Museum and the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, features 98 representative artifacts from the Roman Empire, offering visitors a journey through time and space. The exhibition will run until October 13th, 2024.

The showcased artifacts are all sourced from the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, including treasures unearthed from the Herculaneum and Pompeii sites, as well as pieces from the historic Farnese collection.

The exhibit spans various art forms such as sculptures, frescoes, mosaics, silverware, and glassware.

The exhibition is structured around six themes: "Artistic Language," "Portraits," "Colors," "Trends," "Banquets," and "Techniques," providing a comprehensive exploration of Roman Empire art. Visitors will gain an in-depth understanding of the art and lifestyle during this period.

In curator Peng Zhe's view, to understand Western art, one must first understand the Renaissance; and to understand the Renaissance, one must trace its origins back to the brilliance of Greek-Roman art. If ancient Greek art is seen as the cradle of Western art, then the Roman Empire period is undoubtedly the crucial stage where this stream of art converged into a mighty river.

This exhibition invites visitors to experience a pivotal era in Western art history.

Peng Zhe believes that the collaboration between the Guangdong Museum and the National Archaeological Museum of Naples is a profound tribute to world civilization history.

By admiring the treasured collections of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, visitors gain a glimpse into the brilliance of Roman Empire art. These artworks are not only aesthetic achievements but also vivid embodiments of social identity and cultural fusion.

He hopes that the exhibition will inspire visitors to appreciate the unique artistic charms and profound meanings of various human civilizations, and foster cultural exchange and mutual appreciation between China and Europe.
