On June 13th, the neonatal department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College (SUMC) was filled with emotions as Nan and his family, who traveled from the Netherlands, expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the medical staff.
Nan, now a 22-year-old vibrant young man, was once a premature baby facing life-threatening conditions and abandoned at birth. With the dedicated care of the neonatal team at SUMC, he survived and thrived in a loving adoptive family in the Netherlands. Nan and his adoptive mother made a special trip to the hospital to find the medical staff who saved his life and to express their deepest thanks.
Twenty-two years ago, Nan was born prematurely at 28 weeks, suffering from severe complications including respiratory distress syndrome. He was urgently transferred to SUMC's neonatal department, the first large-scale, fully enclosed critical neonatal care center in eastern Guangdong. The medical team provided not only professional treatment but also selfless care, with staff taking turns to be his "part-time mothers." Under their meticulous care, Nan's condition improved, and he was eventually transferred to the Shantou Social Welfare Institute before being adopted by a loving family.
Today, a tall and cheerful Nan returned to Shantou with his adoptive mother, eager to reconnect with the medical staff who once saved his life and to express his sincere gratitude.
On June 13th, Nan reunited with the medical staff at the First Affiliated Hospital of SUMC. Hearing stories of his early days and seeing those who cared for him brought overwhelming gratitude to both Nan and his mother. "You saved my son," said his emotional adoptive mother.
"We created a miracle of life together," responded Dr. Wu Beiyan and Dr. Guo Jizhong, the attending physicians at the hospital. The neonatal staff present felt a deep sense of pride witnessing Nan's healthy and happy growth. This reunion exemplifies a heartwarming relay of love that transcends cultures and borders, showcasing the First Affiliated Hospital of SUMC's commitment to respecting and cherishing life.
