On May 11th, 2024, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) released data detailing the robust performance of China's auto industry in April.

The data indicates that in the first four months of the year, China exported 1.827 million vehicles, marking a year-on-year increase of 33.4%. This surge is primarily attributed to the enhanced cost-performance ratio of fuel vehicles, a significant rise in new energy vehicle (NEV) exports, and substantial sales in the Russian and European markets.

In April alone, China exported 504,000 vehicles, showing a month-on-month increase of 0.4% and a year-on-year rise of 34%. Traditional fuel vehicle exports in April reached 390,000 units, up by 3.3% month-on-month and 41.6% year-on-year. NEV exports for the month stood at 114,000 units, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 13.3%. From January to April, exports of traditional fuel vehicles totaled 1.407 million units, a 37.7% increase year-on-year, while NEV exports hit 421,000 units, up by 20.8%. Traditional fuel vehicles continue to dominate the export market.

Despite intense market competition and global supply chain instability, China's auto market, particularly the NEV segment, continues to demonstrate steady growth. Pure electric vehicle exports from January to April reached 337,000 units, increasing by 4.5% year-on-year, and plug-in hybrid vehicle exports rose sharply to 83,000 units, a 230% increase. In April, pure electric vehicle exports were 89,000 units, down 2.4% year-on-year, while plug-in hybrid exports were 25,000 units, marking a month-on-month increase of 0.8% and a year-on-year surge of 170%.

Data from Dataforce, a German market research firm, revealed that in March this year, Chinese automakers' market share in Europe surpassed 4% for the first time, with total sales reaching 57,400 units. SAIC Motor's MG brand remains the leading Chinese brand in Europe, with the sales in March increasing by 10% to 25,642 units, accounting for nearly 45% of the total.

From January to March this year, Chinese brands sold 470,000 vehicles in overseas markets, marking a 40% year-on-year increase. The retail performance of Chinese brands in statistically measurable overseas markets has been very strong. The primary drivers behind this export growth are the improved cost-performance ratio of fuel vehicles worldwide and the surge in NEV exports. Additionally, the Russian market contributed nearly 800,000 units to this increase, and the market share of pure electric vehicles in Europe continued to rise, reaching 9.2% in 2023. As a result, both the quantity and average price of automobile exports in China have seen substantial growth.

Notably, in April of this year, China's automobile exports continued to grow rapidly on a year-on-year basis. Among the top ten vehicle exporters, GAC Motor showed the most significant increase, with exports reaching 19,000 units, a 5.5-fold increase compared to the previous year. According to GAC Motor's plans, this year, it will focus on key overseas markets such as Saudi Arabia, Russia, and Mexico, with plans to enter ten new countries including Bangladesh, Ethiopia, New Zealand, and Finland. The sustained growth in automobile export volumes and the continuous expansion of overseas markets highlight the growing influence of Chinese automotive brands globally.

In an effort to strengthen their presence in overseas markets, several car manufacturers are establishing factories abroad. BYD, for instance, has built a NEV factory in Hungary, marking the first NEV factory established by a Chinese brand in Europe. The investment amounts to several billion euros, and the factory will produce EVs and power batteries.
