What happens when a traditional printing company embraces digitization? Step into Lingmei Cultural Technology Co., Ltd., located on Huadi Avenue South in the Liwan District of Guangzhou City, and you'll be amazed by its uniqueness: it resembles a small art studio where you can see rare masterpieces such as "Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains," "Along the River During the Qingming Festival," and "Five Oxen" alongside various innovative digital art interactions. These are the fruits of Lingmei's digital transformation in recent years.
The companyhadbeen in the high-end traditional printing industry for over a decade and transitioning is no easy feat. A series of challenges need to be addressed. Fortunately, Lingmei embraced digitization over a decade ago.
Bringing ancient paintings to life is a significant exploration direction for Lingmei. The Lingmei team has dedicated over 20 years to technology development, innovation, color management, and artistic aesthetics. They developed a way to use nano-microjet technology to replicate traditional Chinese paintings and calligraphy. They have overcome challenges in replicating works on Lingnan non-legacy bamboo slips, silk, and handmade Xuan paper, successfully addressing issues such as ink control and light resistance. Using digital means, Lingmei supports the storage, image restoration, color restoration, cultural conservation, and inheritance of classic ancient books, calligraphy and painting collections, and museum treasures. For example, Lingmei has long provided high-definition reproductions for the Guangdong Provincial Ancient Books Protection Center. Feng Yi, Lingmei's General Manager, introduced that the exploration of the digital transformation began ten years ago, and as mentioned above, the reproduced famous works using artistic nano-microjet high-definition replication technology are almost indistinguishable from the originals. Observing the replica of "Along the River During the Qingming Festival" under a magnifying glass, you will be graced by natural tones and colors. This work is reproduced on traditional silk paper and even faithfully reflects the painter's ink strokes.
Since 2018, Lingmei has accelerated its pace of digital integration and introduced related digital products to the public. In the exhibition hall, reporters saw Shen Zhou's "Lofty Mount Lu" come to life on Lingmei's intelligent art screen. Empowered by digitization, the tall pines, flying waterfalls, and towering mountains in the painting have dynamic effects, allowing the audience to visually immerse themselves and wander in the painting. In the digital painting of "Guangzhou Thirteen Hongs," sailboats and merchants move with the scenery, giving the on-site audience an immersive experience.
To achieve its transformation, Lingmei continuously strengthens its digital talent team. According to Feng Yi, currently, high-tech professionals in fields such as software development, program writing, 3D construction, and visual design account for 20% of the business team. They also invite professionals from universities to provide artistic guidance.
For Feng Yi, perseverance is the key to transformation. "It is important to persevere in doing something and to thoroughly study the details, which will ultimately bring you significant results. Digitization is the core for traditional printing companies to achieve high-quality development."
