On April 6th, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson of China Wang Wenbin, through his Meta Page account, promoted the Chinese Battle Dance, a show of the Henan TV program 2024 Qingming Wonderful Journey. According to Wang, Guangdong's Yingge dance is a traditional performance that cherishes ancestral wisdom, expresses longing for a bright future, and embodies upright and strong values.
As early as two years ago, the Chaoshan Yingge dance quickly gained fame under the name Chinese Battle Dance. Its free and vigorous movements have uplifted the spirits of the Chinese people, sparking enthusiasm for this intangible cultural heritage art form that has been performed for over 300 years. This Chinese New Year, Yingge dance not only gained more attention domestically but also successfully ventured abroad - performing on the streets of London as part of the local New Year celebrations, attracting a live audience of 70 0,000.
What made Yingge dance rise so quickly from leveraging opportunities to generating its own buzz and making a second splash?
To break out, it must innovate. Yingge dance integrates a lot of martial arts elements and does not require a stage; it can be performed in the streets and alleys. It is both a skill and a physical activity, requiring a constant influx of freshmen.
Locally, the Yingge dance performance teams rely more on young enthusiasts who squeeze time out of their schedules and organize practices voluntarily in their spare time. Therefore, behind each vividly colored and distinct role on stage during Yingge dance performances, there are always young faces.
Today, many intangible cultural heritages still facechallengessuch as having few inheritors. Yingge dance was included in the first batch of national-level intangible cultural heritage representative projects as early as 2006. Over the years, instead of being preserved as artifacts displayed in showcases, this intangible heritage has evolved into a more spontaneous mass activity with new talents emerging, resurrecting in the streets and alleys. Amidst the fading traditional atmosphere, in Shantou, Guangdong, the youngest Yingge dance performer this year is not even 30 months old… Yingge dance is stubbornly demonstrating another vitality of traditional cultural inheritance.
To break out, it must stand out. Relying solely on showcasing traditional skills is difficult to gain widespread popularity. Besides having inheritors, making Yingge dance popular also requires those who can ride the wave. Since the new wave of Yingge dance fever began online, relevant departments have responded promptly by launching a large number of new media products conducive to online promotion over the past year, combining with modern dance to actively adapt to new communication platforms, allowing young people to enrich the ancient dance with new expressions. It is no wonder many describe the current development of Yingge dance as both traditional and trendy.
To break out, it must shine. Whenever Yingge dance appears on the streets, it quickly gathers a large number of fans. Whether Yingge dance is popular or not, it will not disrupt the rhythm of dancers exploring innovation, nor will it affect our continuous expectations for high-quality Yingge dance - it is an activity deeply rooted in local customs and sentiments, with a strong mass base. The flow comes naturally, and the strongest atmosphere group is well-deserved.
In the crisp and dense beats of Yingge dance, there lies the code for the revival of Chinese traditional brands and traditional arts. This path to rebirth explored by this old intangible heritage is yet another new story worthy of in-depth discussion.
