Recently, a post-95s girl named Li Youxi (original name: Li Ying) from Tonglu, Zhejiang, gained significant attention for popularizing oracle bone inscriptions. As a graduate specializing in oracle bone inscriptions, she has combined this seemingly “niche” field with stories from the Shang Dynasty, creating vibrant and engaging short videos that have ignited an “oracle bone inscription” trend on the internet.
Li Youxi graduated with a master’s degree in Chinese language and literature with a focus on oracle bone inscriptions from Zhejiang Normal University. She chose this less popular research direction out of personal interest, without giving much thought to employment prospects at the time.
In 2021, after completing her master’s program, Li Youxi faced uncertainty about the future. She explored various paths, working as a Chinese language teacher in educational institutions, attemptIng civil service exams, and eventually landIng a job as a copywriter in a new media company.
While working, Li Youxi discovered effective strategies for operating accounts on short video platforms like Douyin (TikTok) and learned about many knowledge-sharing content creators on these platforms. A new idea gradually took shape in her mInd - to run her own short video account.
Initially unsure of the direction she wanted to take, Li Youxi’s first video was about her reflections on reading, and the second was an introduction to her academic program. Surprisingly, the public’s enthusiasm for oracle bone inscriptions was remarkably high. The video related to her expertise went viral on Douyin, surpassing a million views in a short time. This success boosted Li Youxi’s confidence and provided her with a clear direction.
Li Youxi observed that people were interested in oracle bone inscriptions, but due to their complexity, many lacked the patience for in-depth understanding. To address this, she focused on makIng her videos “lively” and“interestIng.” She meticulously crafted video scripts, considering the tone, pace, and other elements to make the content vivid.
To explain the Chinese character for “冰 (ice),” Li Youxi recorded a video on the frozen Songhua River during a business trip to the north, enhancing the visual appeal of the footage. During the Asian Games in October, she creatively linked the shapes of oracle bone characters to the postures of athletes, explaining the evolution of characters like“走 (walk)” and“射 (shoot),” earning the audience’s love and support.
To avoid errors, Li Youxi would submit each script for explaining oracle bone Inscriptions to her tutor for approval. For every video, she invested substantial time in research and scriptwriting, approaching oracle bone inscription popularization with the dedication of a scholar, producing high-quality videos.
In less than ten months of account operation, Li Youxi has published over 90 videos related to oracle bone inscriptions, amassing nearly 600,000 followers.
In Li Youxi’s view, the power generated from passion is immeasurable. She advises students still in their academic journey not to overly consider whether a field is “niche” or“popular,” as once-popular majors may decline, and seemingly niche fields like oracle bone inscriptions can become popular. She encourages finding a career one loves and diving into it, assuring that there will be no regrets.
