The Winter Solstice is one of China's important traditional festivals. On December 22nd, the winter solstice of 2023, with the guidance of the Guangzhou Tianhe Cultural Center, the School of International Education of Guangdong University of Finance and the Tianhe Folk Artists Association held an event to celebrate the Winter Solstice at the Hao Clan Ancestral Hall in Chebei.
Early in the morning, led by descendants of the Hao family, international students stepped into the Hao Clan Ancestral Hall in Chebei with a history of over 500 years. Mr. Hao Haihua, an inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage "Chebei Dragon-style Kungfu", taught the students the skills in person. Under Mr. Hao's meticulous guidance, students managed to grasp the basic etiquette of Chinese martial arts as well as the basic techniques of Dragon-style Kungfu while learning by their hearts the virtues of the Chinese nation, such as comity, resilience, self-abnegation, wisdom, and fearlessness against oppression.
To help the students enhance self-protection awareness and apply Chinese martial arts to practical life, Mr. Hao also taught them self-defense techniques tailored to street robbery and violent scenarios, including evasion and counterattacks targeting vulnerable areas of the abuser.
After practicing the Dragon-style Kungfu, students engaged in the making of tangyuan (glutinous rice balls with southern characteristics) and jiaozi (dumplings with northern characteristics), immersing themselves in the rich atmosphere of traditional folk culture.
In addition, as it was time for final exams, teachers from the Guangdong University of Finance specially arranged the final exam for the subject of Chinese Society and Culture in the "Pushu Hall" of the Hao Clan Ancestral Hall, with the purpose of letting students understand the importance that Chinese families have always placed on reading and learning. It is reported that the "Pushu Hall" originated from the historical story of an ancient scholar called Hao Long. It is said that when his neighbors dry their clothes under the sun to prevent moisture and insects, Hao Long always takes pride in sun-drying his books.
