Guangzhou Cultural Park witnessed the inauguration of the commemorative Yang Shanshen's 110th birth anniversary calligraphy and painting exhibition on August 25th. This exhibition, which will run until September 12th, showcases over 50 pieces of Yang Shanshen's calligraphy and paintings from the collection of Liwan District Archives.

Yang Shanshen (1913-2004), a native of Taishan, Guangdong, is a distinguished contemporary Chinese painter, widely regarded as a prominent figure of the Lingnan School of Painting. Alongside Guan Shanyue, Li Xiongcai, and Zhao Shao'ang, he is hailed as one of the "Four Great Masters of the Contemporary Lingnan School" or simply the "Lingnan Quartet".

As a torchbearer of the Lingnan School, Yang Shanshen possessed a distinctive style, exploring a wide range of subjects in his art, including animals, flowers, birds, landscapes, and figures. He excelled at employing a dual technique in his artwork, where some parts of the painting were executed with precise and meticulous brushwork, while other areas were approached with a freer and more expressive style. His brushwork was delicate yet carried a touch of simplicity, resulting in lifelike and vivid representations. Through his rich mastery of brush and ink techniques, he developed a unique artistic temperament that was both refined and elegant. This innovative approach elevated the Lingnan School of Painting to an entirely new level, charting new dimensions for its evolution.

Over 50 pieces of Yang Shanshen's calligraphy and painting from the Liwan District Archives collection are displayed at the exhibition, drawing enthusiasts of traditional Chinese art.

Yang Tianyi, the son of Yang Shanshen, commented, "In fact, Japanese painting originated from Chinese painting. During the Meiji Restoration, Japanese painting not only absorbed existing Chinese painting elements but also integrated Western influences. Inspired by Japanese painting, Gao Jianfu, my father's mentor, believed that Chinese painting also needed innovation by incorporating Western painting elements, leading to the formation of the Lingnan School."

Reflecting on his father's learning and creative journey under Gao Jianfu's tutelage, Yang Tianyi expressed his optimism about the prospects of the Lingnan School. "Our generation of artists can learn from the spirits of our predecessors, absorb the essence of Western art, and fuse it with China's rich cultural heritage to innovate our artistic styles."

As a native of Guangdong, Yang Tianyi shared his father's deep affection for Guangzhou. Through this exhibition, he aims to promote the spirit and essence of the Lingnan School, ensuring its enduring legacy.

“岭南四家”之一杨善深诞辰110周年书画展在广州荔湾区开幕

纪念岭南画派著名画家杨善深诞辰110周年书画展于8月25日在广州文化公园开幕。本次书画展展出了荔湾区档案馆藏品中的杨善深书画作品50余幅，展览持续至9月12日。

杨善深（1913—2004），是广东台山人，是我国当代杰出的国画家，岭南画派卓有成就的代表人物之一，与关山月、黎雄才、赵少昂合称“当代岭南画派四大家”或“岭南四家”。

作为岭南画派的传承人，杨善深个人风格鲜明，绘画题材广泛，走兽家畜、花鸟翎毛、山水人物等均有极高造诣。他尤其善于运用兼工带写的画法，笔法细腻而略带朴拙，造型写实生动，并以其丰富的笔墨技巧，发展出独有的气格而又有致雅的画风，把岭南画派艺术推到一个崭新的境界，为岭南画派的发展开辟了更广阔的道路。

本次书画展展出了荔湾区档案馆藏品中的杨善深书画作品50余幅，吸引不少书画爱好者到来。

杨善深之子杨天颐表示：“事实上，日本画是从中国画发展而来，在明治维新时期，日本画除了融合了已有的中国画元素，又融合了西方画。我父亲老师高剑父先生当时受到启发，认为中国画也需要革新，加入一些西方绘画元素，后来发展为岭南画派。”

从杨善深师从高剑父先生的学习经历和创作经历中，杨天颐深有体会，认为岭南画派的发展空间大有可为：“我们新一代的画家可以学习先辈的精神，汲取西方画的精华元素，结合中华优秀传统文化，创新艺术风格。”

作为广东人，杨天颐说，父亲对广州有着深厚的感情，通过此次书画展，希望能弘扬岭南画派精神和精髓，让岭南画派根脉不断。
