Recently, oysters from various regions in Guangdong have taken center stage, entering a period of intense competition. Zhanjiang aims to establish itself as the "World Oyster Capital"; Yangxi in Yangjiang presents an extravagant oyster feast; Taishan in Jiangmen welcomes oyster enthusiasts via the new Huangmaohai cross-sea passage; and areas such as Raoping in Chaozhou, Nanao in Shantou, and Shanwei are celebrating the peak season for large and succulent oysters. With Guangdong's oyster farming area and production ranking third nationwide and the rapid development of modern marine ranches, this oyster celebration is becoming ever more spectacular.
In the Potou District of Zhanjiang, the harvest season for Guandu oysters runs from December to the Qingming Festival in the following year. The area boasts a rich history of oyster farming, where Shimen Bay's unique freshwater and saltwater blend attracts bountiful plankton, providing an abundance of nutrients crucial for oyster growth. During winter harvesting, the oysters, with plump and tender meat, burst forth from the water. Thanks to their exceptional quality, Guandu oysters have attracted numerous food enthusiasts, significantly boosting the local economy. The total farming area in the town spans approximately 12,800 mu, yielding an annual production of 32,000 tons, with a production value of 320 million yuan, making it a key driver of economic growth in the region.
As a major oyster-producing area, Taishan in Jiangmen has benefited from the opening of the Huangmaohai cross-sea passage, which has alleviated transportation bottlenecks, allowing a wave of food enthusiasts to surge in. At dawn, the docks and seafood markets buzz with activity as oysters are packed and shipped to various locations, marking a new stage in the industry's development.
Raoping of Chaozhou, as the "Eastern Gateway" of Guangdong, boasts rich maritime resources. There, the Sanbaimen Wharf fishing port market is bustling with energy. The winter harvest of oysters coincides with a dazzling array of seafood, drawing truck drivers from surrounding cities to load their goods in the early morning, demonstrating the thriving scene of Raoping's oyster industry.
In 2023, Guangdong's oyster farming area reached 452,000 mu, with a total output of 1.197 million tons and a total industrial chain output value of 47.097 billion yuan, solidifying its position as a major player in marine shellfish farming. Notably, the oyster industry in Zhanjiang stands out with a farming area of approximately 100,000 mu, an output of 220,000 tons, and an industrial chain value of around 7 billion yuan, serving as a pillar of marine fisheries and a vital source of livelihood for local fishermen.
In recent years, Guangdong has also been branding its oysters, with names such as Zhanjiang oysters, Chengcun oysters, Taishan oysters, and Chenzhou oysters gradually gaining national recognition.
