Do cats have a "language"? Can humans communicate with cats by mimicking their sounds? Li Ge, a 29-year-old boy from Wuhan, Hubei, seems to have a unique "superpower" for chatting with unfamiliar cats in public: in his neighborhood, where no cats are initially there, a few stray cats often appear from the bushes when he meows, with some even rolling over and showing their bellies.
Li has shared videos of his "cat language" online. While some initially questioned his ability to call the cats to be a mere coincidence, the tide shifted as he used his "cat language" to mediate conflicts between cats and even helped someone locate a lost cat by looping his sounds. Now, netizens call him a "master in cat language."
"'Cat language' isn't as complex as human language. It’s more an emotional expression cats use with people," says Li. "Many try to interpret cats in their own ways, which can easily lead to misunderstandings. I've learned to understand their true state more accurately through years of observing and imitating their sounds and movements." According to Li, not every cat owner needs to learn to meow, but understanding a cat's emotions is essential to building a positive human-pet bond.
