On May 17th, the "Tracing the History of Guangzhou: Archaeological Discoveries of 2023" exhibition opened at the Southern Han Mausoleums Museum, showcasing the new findings from 20 archaeological projects conducted in Guangzhou in 2023.
Running until October 20th, 2024, the exhibition employs interactive and educational displays to guide the public through a multidimensional exploration of archaeological wonders.
In 2023, Guangzhou completed a total of 446 archaeological projects, surveying an area of 156.26 million square meters, conducting explorations in 2.36 million square meters, and excavating 17,879 square meters. These efforts led to the discovery of 532 ancient tombs and the retrieval of 2,894 pieces (sets) of various artifacts.
Central to the exhibition are the new findings from the 20 archaeological projects in Guangzhou in 2023, featuring stone tools, pottery, bronze artifacts, ceramics, glass, crystal, as well as animal and plant remains.
The exhibition is divided into two parts: "Settlements Along Two Rivers" and "Journey Between Two Worlds," presenting two perspectives on tracing the historical context of Guangzhou. The first part traces the footsteps of the ancient Yue people along the Zengjiang River and Liuxi River during the pre-Qin period, revealing their life and interactions with neighboring communities. The second part examines burial sites to observe the living spaces, kinship identities, secular life, and beliefs of ancient Guangzhou residents.
"Settlements Along Two Rivers" reconstructs the historical landscape of small river basin settlements between the mountainous areas of northern Lingnan and the delta plains, showcasing the lives of prehistoric to Shang Dynasty ancestors living in the Zengjiang and Liuxi River basins.
"Journey Between Two Worlds" focuses on the archaeological findings of Guangzhou's burial sites in 2023, illustrating how burial practices intertwine the realms of the living and the afterlife, reflecting varying attitudes toward death across different historical periods.
