In April, the picturesque city of Zhanjiang in Guangdong Province is adorned with vibrant patches of mangrove forests and lush greens, epitomizing the region's ecological vitality.

As China's largest and most concentrated National Nature Reserve for mangroves, the Zhanjiang Mangrove National Nature Reserve has diligently safeguarded these invaluable ecosystems over the past year. The reserve has nurtured mangrove wetlands, undertaken comprehensive ecological restoration projects, focused on establishing the Jinniu Island demonstration site, fortified front-line patrol capabilities, and conducted meticulous daily monitoring. Bolstering its regulatory prowess, the reserve has embraced innovative technologies, integrating GIS, drones, and high-resolution satellite imagery to enhance its intelligent supervision, quadrupling annual dronestagram missions from one to four.

Guangdong Province, home to 11,000 hectares of mangrove areas – the largest in China—boasts a diverse array of 27 species across 24 genera and 18 families, making it one of the most species-rich regions for mangroves. Undeterred in its commitment to mangrove conservation, Guangdong has consistently advanced its efforts. In 2023, the provincial government promulgated the "Special Plan for Mangrove Protection and Restoration in Guangdong Province",outlining annual mangrove afforestation targets. According to this plan, in 2024, the province aims to cultivate 2,600 hectares of new mangrove forests and rehabilitate 1,200 hectares. In March 2024, the Forestry Administration of Guangdong Province issued the "Notice on Further Strengthening Mangrove Management",emphasizing the need for comprehensive planning of mangrove conservation and restoration, expediting afforestation and restoration endeavors, ensuring rigorous monitoring and regulation of mangrove environments at the local level, strictly penalizing resource violations, implementing holistic ecosystem protection, and fostering sustainable development of mangroves.

"Efforts to cultivate and conserve mangroves must carefully balance ecological suitability and socio-economic feasibility to preserve the diversity, integrity, and stability of mangrove ecosystems," stated an official from the Forestry Administration of Guangdong Province. Looking ahead, Guangdong will prioritize mangrove afforestation within ecological red lines and protected areas, leveraging platforms such as the Shenzhen International Mangrove Center and the Zhanjiang Mangrove City. It plans to establish large-scale (10,000 mu) mangrove demonstration zones, create a cross-regional mangrove restoration cooperation mechanism among the Pearl River Delta, eastern and western parts of Guangdong, harness the benefits of incentive policies, promote integrated aquaculture-forestry models, cultivate a strong brand economy centered around mangrove ecological products, and foster a harmonious integration of industry and ecology. By doing so, the province aims to pave the way for converting its lush green landscapes into tangible economic assets, thereby driving further progress in the construction of a verdant, beautiful Guangdong.
