The construction of the phase II China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) project, a "super microscope" for exploring the microstructure of materials, commenced in Dongguan, Guangdong on March 30th.
Since the completion of its first phase in 2018 and subsequent national acceptance, with over 6,000 registered users and more than 1,500 completed research projects, significant scientific and technological innovations have been achieved in key areas such as aerospace components, lithium-ion batteries, rare-earth magnetism, and new high-temperature superconductors.
The construction of the second phase is expected to last for 5 years and 9 months. The number of neutron spectrometers will increase to 20, and the design target for accelerator beam power will rise from 100 kW to 500 kW. This advancement will not only shorten experimental time effectively but also enhance experimental resolution, enabling the measurement of smaller samples and capturing faster motion processes.
