The Qixi Festival is one of the most romantic traditional festivals in China. The carnival that is also known as the “Qiqiao Festival” is Chinese “Valentine’s Day”. It originated from a Chinese folk tale of the cowherd and the weaving maiden, reflecting Chinese people’s view of marriage. It is customary for young women to set up seasonal fruits and vegetables to the moon at night, earnestly praying for ingenuity and a perfect match. For this year’s Qixi Festival, Tan Zhanpeng, a representative inheritor of Yue embroidery in Guangdong Province, specially designed a captivating artwork entitled "Threading Needles Under the Moon". Different from traditional characteristics of the embroidery, this work adapted an animated cartoon style. A girl was dressed in a blue gown and wore a phoenix-like hairpin, threading a needle under the crescent moon. Tan’s work is based on traditional festivals, and he believes this style will be applied more frequently in the future. He thinks it is young people’s attention that Yue embroidery needs to attract. #artandculture
