On the morning of July 23rd, the reporter from the Yangcheng Evening News explored the production of the Chinese version of the classic musical - "The Phantom of the Opera". After an entire week of installation and debugging of all the stage equipment, the "Palais Garnier" is now "constructed" in Guangzhou. The magnificent costumes, make-up, and sets are in place and were showcased in advance on July 23rd. The world-class classic masterpiece, in its first-ever Chinese rendition, is set to make its debut on July 25th at the Guangzhou Grand Theatre. The show will run for 24 consecutive performances until August 13th, welcoming its first audience.
"The Phantom of the Opera" is a globally acclaimed and beloved musical that has garnered a massive following. Its grandand majestic stage designs and opulent period costumes are a testament to unparalleled artistic craftsmanship and the creators' dedication to perfection. After years of anticipation, this legendary production, which has been running for 37 years, finally receives its Chinese language adaptation.
As one of the most "expensive" productions in the world of musicals, "The Phantom of the Opera" boasts an awe-inspiring stage setup. From the three-meter diameter chandelier to the 2230-meter stage curtain used for the play within the play, as well as the exquisitely detailed classical fountains, carved doors, and angel statues. The stage scenery changes almost every 5 minutes during the nearly three-hour performance.
In the Chinese version of the drama, while the actors and dubbing will be localized, all the production elements will maintain the "top-notch" lineup seen in its world tour version: the luxurious stage sets, the vintage and glamorous costumes, and a large orchestra composed of more than a dozen musicians. The world-class opulence of the stage is now within reach for Chinese audiences.
The complexity of the stage design can be seen in the "underground lake" scene alone. To create the effect of misty waters, the production team will use more than 280 candles, 250 kilograms of dry ice, and 10 smoke machines. The crystal chandelier, a hallmark of "The Phantom of the Opera", is composed of 6,000 pearls, each strand containing 35 pearls and weighing a total of one ton. The theater's stage frames are adorned with intricately embossed gold edges, recreating the grandeur of the "Palais Garnier" right before the audience's eyes.
All costumes in "The Phantom of the Opera" adhere faithfully to the legendary costume designer Maria Björnson's original designs from the show's premiere in 1986 and are meticulously handcrafted by experienced costume makers. To recreate the glorious setting of the 19th-century Palais Garnier, the production team has made over 230 sets of exquisite costumes.
Additionally, each wig worn by the characters is individually handmade based on the actor's head measurements, taking anywhere from 40 to 70 hours to complete. The costume and wig team for the touring production consists of nine members, and each performance requires an additional 11 dressers to assist the actors with quick costume changes.
