In July, Guangdong steps into a bountiful harvest season of fruits, of which sweetness not only adorns the dining tables of citizens but also renders short-distance trips within the province that center around "fruit picking", a novel choice for holiday relaxation. This new model combined agriculture with tourism is gradually gaining market's favor, showcasing a vibrant outlook in the development of Guangdong's ecological leisure tourism industry.

Deep integration of culture, tourism, agriculture, and business

Recently, fruit-picking experiences such as the kinds of wampee and longan have gone popular for agritainment near Guangzhou. Online review data shows that since July, searches for wampee picking have increased by 420% compared to June, with Zengcheng District and Conghua District being the most trending areas.

"I never thought that eating fruit could be so down-to-earth and culturally rich, it seems the trip was well worthwhile," exclaimed Ms. Wu, a tourist from Guangzhou, after a litchi cultural tour in early July to an ecological orchard in Zengcheng District.

That day, she and over sixty families experienced a cultural vacation lifestyle of fruit picking, which blends litchi picking, food tasting, and experience sharing. The activity is a microcosm of Zengcheng District's deep exploration of litchi culture, showcasing the deep integration of culture, tourism, agriculture, and business typical of the Guangdong style.

Frequent composite routes of "Fruit Picking+"

Guangdong is home to various tropical fruits. Every July and August, a variety of fruits come to market in succession. Reporters learned that tourism routes themed around "fruit picking" of seasonal fruits are particularly favored by tourists.

To enrich the travel experience, composite routes like "Fruit Picking + Ecology," "Fruit Picking + Water Play," "Fruit Picking + Gourmet Food," "Fruit Picking + Family Fun," and others are increasing in number.

Taking a two-day trip to Heyuan as an example. Tourists follow the guide to the Yinzui (Eagle's beak) Peach Base in Lianping County for a pick and taste. Afterwards, they can visit the Nanyuan Ancient Village, the Xinfengjiang Dam and Dahuzhai enclosed houses (a traditional kind of Chinese architecture), where Hakka flavor meals are offered on the century-old street.

"Fruit-picking tours are gradually evolving from simply picking fruits and vegetables to a picking experience that integrates eating, drinking, playing, entertainment, shopping, and various other tourism elements," said an official from Guangdong China Travel Service Co., Ltd.

Ecotourism brings economic vitality to rural areas

Industry insiders believe that "fruit picking tours bring economic vitality to rural areas". The increase in the number of tourists has brought improvement in tourism-related industries in rural areas, employment opportunities and income sources for local residents and the growth of the rural economy. On the other hand, tourism activities promote the cultural inheritance of rural areas, helping to protect and promote local culture.

Guangdong boasts a wealth of natural landscapes and a diverse ecosystem to attract tourists. "In Guangdong, tourists can visit nature reserves, observe wildlife, participate in ecological adventure activities, gaining a deep understanding of the natural environment and biodiversity. At the same time, Guangdong enjoys a long history and rich cultural heritage, including Lingnan-style architecture, ancient villages, temples and more, allowing for more creative routes that highlight rural charm and cultural exploration," industry insiders added.
