With 100 days to go before the 2026 APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting, 136 foreign journalists and self-media bloggers from APEC member economies gathered in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. On August 13th, they took part in a media tour of Shenzhen's smart manufacturing sector, visiting the HONOR Intelligent Manufacturing Industrial Park and research and development laboratories in Pingshan, Shenzhen, to experience firsthand Shenzhen's vibrant technological innovation.

At the HONOR Intelligent Manufacturing Industrial Park, 85% of the production line processes are completed by automated equipment, with over 60% of the machinery independently developed by the company. One smartphone rolls off the line every 28.5 seconds. This facility is the industry's first Level 4 smart manufacturing factory and the first zero-carbon factory in the mobile phone sector. British media professional Daniel Mark Aspinwall marveled during the tour that the high degree of automation makes production safer, cleaner and more efficient, while also allowing quality products to reach consumers faster.

A "human-robot race" brought the visit to a climax. British technology analyst Ben Wood went head-to-head with "Lightning," HONOR's 1.69-meter-tall humanoid robot. Lightning quickly picked up speed on its mechanical legs and comfortably pulled ahead of its human opponent. In April, Lightning won the 2026 Beijing E-Town Half Marathon and Humanoid Robot Half Marathon, finishing in 50 minutes and 26 seconds.

Lightning's run is also a snapshot of Shenzhen's innovation ecosystem. In 2025, Shenzhen's robotics industry recorded a total output value of 242.6 billion yuan. At the same time, Shenzhen is accelerating its development of emerging fields including AI terminals and embodied AI.

With decades of experience in the communications technology industry, Ben Wood said he was impressed not only by HONOR's technological advances, but also by Shenzhen's broader innovation ecosystem and industrial synergy. "The entire supply chain, along with the many startups here, is actively investing in breakthrough technologies," he said. In his view, the upcoming APEC meeting will draw more global attention to the innovation vitality and technological capabilities of China and Shenzhen. "It's going to be an exciting moment," he said.
