On Aug 13th, the Shiziyang Channel, a major transportation project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, marked a key construction milestone. The Shiziyang Bridge, a critical part of the project, completed the main construction of its east and west anchorages. Since construction of the diaphragm wall for the west anchorage began on March 30th, 2023, workers have spent 1,243 days and nights completing the anchorage, which has now taken root along the Shiziyang waterway as the world's largest suspension bridge anchorage.
The Shiziyang Channel is approximately 35 kilometers long, stretching from Nansha District in Guangzhou in the west to Humen and Shatian towns in Dongguan in the east. It consists of the river-crossing main bridge and land approach bridges and is the first double-deck composite highway passage at the Pearl River estuary. The main bridge, Shiziyang Bridge, is set to achieve five world records for a double-deck steel truss suspension bridge in main span length, tower height, anchorage foundation, main cable diameter and number of lanes.
An anchorage is one of the key load-bearing components of a suspension bridge. It consists of a foundation, anchorage body and anchoring system. It secures the bridge's main cables and bears the tensile forces transmitted by them. Shiziyang Bridge has two anchorages, located in Shatian Town, Dongguan, and Nansha District, Guangzhou, respectively. The largest anchorage foundation has a diameter of approximately 130 meters and a maximum depth of 36 meters, setting a world record for projects of its kind.
As a landmark transportation project during the 15th Five-Year Plan period, the Shiziyang Channel is expected to open to traffic in 2029. Upon completion, it will form a cluster of river-crossing and sea-spanning passages together with the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link and Nansha Bridge, further advancing the integrated development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
