On December 28, the TCL·2025 Huizhou Marathon brought together 13,000 runners from across the country. Starting from Huizhou Stadium, participants followed a route linking the city’s most emblematic landmarks, showcasing Huizhou’s harmonious blend of natural landscapes and historical legacy.
The event featured 5,000 marathon runners and 8,000 half marathon runners, with an upgraded awards system that expanded the Open Category rankings’ to the top 30 and introduced a special event record-breaking award. Certified as a China Athletics Association Class A-Event, results are officially recognized nationally and internationally.
Huizhou, a National Historical and Cultural City with over 5,000 years of civilization, has long been shaped by more than 480 philosophers and literary figures have set foot in Huizhou, leaving behind precious cultural heritage.
Among them, the most notable is Su Dongpo, literary giant in the Northern Song Dynasty. Drawing inspiration from Dongpo’s spirit, the marathon embraced the theme “Run Through the Mountains and Seas of Huizhou, Embrace the Culture of Su Dongpo,” The Qing Dynasty Jiang Fengchen expressed in his poet, "Ever since Master Dongpo was exiled to the South Sea, none under heaven dared to look down upon Huizhou," grealty interprets the glory Dongpo brought to this city.
This year's event continues to use the thematic slogan “Run freely through the mountains and seas of Huizhou, fully enjoy the culture of Su Dongpo”, with another slogan of “Huizhou isn't in the heavens, you can reach it by going forward. The theme integrates the landscapes and cultural sentiments from Dongpo's writings into the event experience, allowing runners to feel the contentment of ", I would not mind being a Lingnan " and "with a bamboo cane and sandals of straw, lighter by far than a horse.” while competing and enjoying the surrounding at one time.
From visual identity to spiritual core, the 2025 Huizhou Marathon continues to deeply integrate Dongpo culture, opening this running event with their initiative of “Run Through the Mountains and Seas of Huizhou, Embrace the Culture of Su Dongpo,” Zhong Liang, Director of the Huizhou Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism, and Sports, introduced that this year's marathon theme is “Huizhou isn't in the heavens, you can reach it by going forward ". The marathon spirit is displayed from the second line of the slogan " you can reach it by going forward ", regardless of how far the finish line is, just keep running forward. "We sincerely invite every runner to respond to this call across a millennium time river with their footsteps."
It was revealed that this year's Huizhou Marathon participant attire is also full of Dongpo elements. The attire uses "Purple Air from the East" as its color theme, printed with an image of Su Dongpo running and his representative words "呵呵" (hehe). Zhong Liang stated that Su Dongpo was a master of 'hehe, using it frequently in many of his letters and notes. Why is life not happy? Only because one hasn't read Su Dongpo. He hopes participants can embrace a free-spirited mindset like Dongpo's, bidding farewell to the past while conforming to the beautiful wish of "As long as you set off, you will surely arrive."
This year's finisher medal continues the tri-fold design, enhanced with a lucky blind box concept. It blends the charm of Su Dongpo, the color of lychee red, and Lingnan-style windows, echoing the famous line "If I could eat 300 lychees every day, I would not mind being a Lingnan person." Simultaneously, under the theme "Mountains and Seas as Omens, New Year Wishes Fulfilled," it innovatively adopts a blind box format containing three detachable refrigerator magnets. These feature the Echeng Bridge symbolizing "Great Plans Unfolding," Huizhou West Lake symbolizing "Continuous Good Fortune," and Mount Luofu symbolizing "Hopeful Spring Mountains," wishing runners success in their endeavors as they traverse mountains and seas.
An important change in this year's course design is that both the marathon and half marathon finish lines are set inside the Huizhou Olympic Sports Center Stadium. This makes it currently the only marathon event in the province with its finish line inside a professional stadium. This idea not only connects Huizhou's natural scenic like mountains and seas but also leads runners through cultural heritage, passing city landmarks like the Echeng Bridge, West Lake, Hejiang Tower, Shuidong Street, and the Dongpo Ancestral Temple before ending in the Olympic Stadium where represents the prestigious respect to sports in the city.
Zhong Liang introduced that this year's course design aims to convey to runners Huizhou's urban character of "city ‘s poetry vivid crossing over with tradition and modernity ": Running along the West Lake, participants feel the warmth of "Where the heart finds peace, that is home"; traversing Shuidong Street and Hejiang Tower, to gain the touches of profound heritage rooted by millennia-old cultural veins; passing the Echeng Bridge and new urban districts to see the energetic vitality of Huizhou's development. This course is the flows of Huizhou's urban character.
