A single letter, a small remittance, crossing mountains and seas, always returns home.

Millions of Qiaopi, remittance certificates sent by overseas Chinese to their families back home, are not only financial receipts, but also vivid reflections of historical and social transformation across continents. These documents, rarely seen elsewhere in the world, form a unique cultural phenomenon. Passed down for over a century, Qiaopi has transcended its yellowed paper and silver envelopes to embody a powerful and dynamic legacy in the new era. Today, it is more important than ever to turn our lenses and pens toward the descendants of those who sent and received Qiaopi, telling their stories across the seas. Through digital storytelling, we aim to illustrate the enduring spirit of commitment and decode the cultural legacy that has endured through time.

A Qiaopi letter

This year marks the 12th anniversary of the inclusion of China's "Qiaopi Archives" in UNESCO's Memory of the World (MoW) Register. As another cycle of time unfolds, under the guidance of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the Guangdong Provincial Government and in celebration of the Dragon Boat Festival, Yangcheng Evening News is launching a global campaign titled "In Search of Descendants of Qiaopi". In collaboration with leading Chinese-language media worldwide, the initiative will include global clue collection, field research, and essay contests, all designed to rekindle the sense of home and nation captured in Qiaopi, highlight the perseverance of overseas Chinese descendants, and write a new chapter in the modern Chinese story.

A Qiaopi mailed from the Taiwan Province of China

Yangcheng Evening News Group is one of China's earliest-established major newspaper conglomerates. With "Culture as the Soul of Journalism" as its core philosophy, its flagship "Yangcheng Evening News" is a leading media brand deeply rooted in Lingnan culture. The group is committed to building an internationally recognized platform for promoting Lingnan culture and has developed a multifaceted international communication system.

From the date of this launch through the end of September 2025, the campaign "Qiaopi Across Mountains and Seas: In Search of Descendants of Qiaopi" will work with major Qiaopi museums and archives in Guangdong's historic hometowns of overseas Chinese to uncover and share representative Qiaopi stories. Through interviews with descendants of Qiaopi and college scholars both in China and abroad, a series of themed reports will be released. At the same time, the "Qiaopi Across Mountains and Seas" global essay contest will open for submissions from overseas Chinese descendants, especially students and youth, encouraging them to creatively explore the theme through online contributions.
