On the afternoon of March 6th, the Guangdong delegation held an open group meeting at the third session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC). A total of 267 journalists from over a hundred domestic and international media outlets entered the venue with their cameras, taking close-up shots and documenting the delegates' deliberations and speeches. Following last year's ''special invitation'', Guangdong once again broke traditional barriers, inviting the media to get up close to the delegates, showcasing its open stance.
During the Guangdong Delegation's open day on March 7th, 2024, the invitation to ''Let our journalist friends come to the front to take photos'' was met with thunderous applause.
This year, Guangdong took openness a step further. From the very beginningof the meeting, there were no restrictions on media access. Journalists, both domestic and international, were able to enter the hall and take close-up shots.
''The moment journalists were invited into the hall last year left a deep impression on me. I was the first reporter to step inside,'' recalled Gao Jin from Overseas Chinese Newspaper of Europe, who attended Guangdong Delegation's open day for the second time. ''Being able to do this again makes me truly feel Guangdong's openness and confidence.''
As Desca, a journalist from Indonesia's Antara News Agency, entered the venue, she was immediately drawn to a Chinese journalist testing an exoskeleton robot. Observing the scene for a while, she remarked on the innovative equipment used by Chinese media: ''I may not need it now, but this would be incredibly useful for media colleagues carrying heavy gear.'' During the Q&A session, Desca, who closely follows China's technological advancements, asked NPC delegate and Shenzhen Mayor Qin Weizhong about Shenzhen's strategies for enhancing its high-tech ecosystem and further boosting innovation competitiveness.
Meanwhile, foreign journalists were also broadcasting live from the event. Among them was Li Huadong, a reporter from Papua New Guinea (PNG) China Press. ''There are many overseas Chinese in PNG, and Guangdong is a well-known hometown for overseas Chinese. Through this event, I hope to learn more about Guangdong's policies related to overseas Chinese,'' he said.
When close-up access shifts from a "special invitation" to the "new normal," and when foreign journalists naturally enter the venue to capture remarkable moments, China's leading economic province is offering a vivid interpretation of openness through the lens of sincerity and equal engagement.
