Academician Huang Xuhua, the chief designer of China's first-generation nuclear submarines, passed away at the age of 99 on February 6th in Wuhan, Hubei province. His relatives and friends from his hometown in the Chaoshan region are mourning his loss with deep sorrow, remembering the remarkable achievements of this great scientist and reflecting on his strong ties to his homeland.

Born on March 12th, 1926, in Shanwei, Guangdong Province, with his ancestral roots in Jieyang, Huang Xuhua studied at Yuhuai High Schoolin Shantou. As a Chaoshan native, Huang had a deep connection to his hometown. He frequently returned to visit relatives. He cared about and supported the development and progress of his hometown.

In Xinliao Village in Jieyang, where Huang's ancestral home is located, the "Chongde Hall" holds the memories of his childhood. The inscription "seclusion" and "virtue"on the lintel of the alley behind the ancestral house not only reflect the family values of the Huang family but also serve as a portrayal of Huang's life. Mr. Wang, a citizen of Jieyang, specially traveled to Huang's hometown to lay flowers in tribute. He expressed, "Mr. Huang made tremendous contributions to the prosperity of the country throughout his life. His spirit will inspire future generations to work hard and study diligently."

Huang's alma mater, Yuhuai High School in Shantou, also deeply mourns the loss of this esteemed alumnus. Zeng Yanhui, a teacher stated, "Academician Huang Xuhua's spirit is a beacon for our students'growth. We will guide our students to look up to him as a role model, to dream big, and to study hard." A senior student, Zhang Shuqin, shared, "Academician Huang's advice, 'Be of good character, focus on your studies, and have a wide range of interests,' is the driving force behind our efforts to move forward."

Huang not only dedicated his life to China's nuclear submarine but also remained deeply connected to his hometown. He visited his alma mater, Yuhuai High School, on numerous occasions, engaging in discussions with students. He also donated to establish the "Huang Xuhua Talent Award." In 2017, Huang was honored with the "Chaoshan Xinghe Achievement Award," and in 2018, he donated a model of a nuclear submarine to the Chaoshan Xinghe Award Foundation. In 2023, the foundation established the "Chaoshan Xinghe Huang Xuhua Science and Technology Innovation Award" with a starting fund of 500,000 yuan, donated by Huang.

中国核潜艇先驱黄旭华院士逝世，潮汕乡亲深切缅怀

中国第一代核潜艇工程总设计师黄旭华院士于2月6日在湖北武汉逝世，享年99岁。他的家乡潮汕地区的亲友们怀着沉痛的心情，深切缅怀这位伟大科学家的赫赫功勋，追忆他与故土的深厚情缘。

黄旭华，1926年3月12日出生于广东省汕尾市（原海丰县），祖籍揭阳市，曾在汕头市聿怀中学求学。作为一名潮汕人，黄旭华情系桑梓，多次回乡省亲，关注并支持家乡的建设与发展。

在黄旭华的祖居地揭阳揭东区玉湖镇新寮村，“崇德堂”承载着他少年时代的回忆。祖屋后巷门楣上镌刻的“潜光”“隐德”四字，既是黄氏家族的家风，也是黄旭华一生的写照。揭阳市民王先生专程赶到黄旭华故居敬献鲜花，他表示：“黄老一生为国家繁荣昌盛作出了巨大贡献，他的精神将激励后一代努力工作、学习。”

黄旭华的母校汕头市聿怀中学也深切缅怀这位老学长。英才班班主任曾燕辉表示：“黄旭华院士的精神是我们学生成长的灯塔，我们将教导学子们以他为榜样，心怀梦想，刻苦学习。”高三学生章澍钦说：“黄爷爷的寄语‘人品要好，学习要专，爱好要广泛’是我们努力向前的动力。”

黄旭华院士不仅为国家的核潜艇事业倾注了毕生心血，也始终心系家乡。他曾多次回到母校聿怀中学，与学弟学妹们交流，并捐资设立“黄旭华育才奖”。2017年，黄旭华被授予“潮汕星河成就奖”，并于2018年捐赠核潜艇模型给潮汕星河奖基金会。2023年，潮汕星河奖基金会以黄旭华捐赠的50万元为基础，设立“潮汕星河黄旭华科技创新奖”。
