China Spallation Neutron Source completes over 1,700 user experiments

Located in Songshan Lake, Dongguan, the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) is the first national major scientific infrastructure in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and the world's fourth pulse spallation neutron source. As of now, the CSNS has registered 7,117 users, with a quarter of them from the GBA. The facility has completed over 1,700 user experiments, achieving significant scientific results in key fields such as aviation, aerospace, high-speed rail, ships, new energy, and materials science.

The CSNS functions like a "super microscope," using the penetrating ability of neutrons to study the microscopic structures and movements of materials. In the field of new energy vehicles, it was the first to discover an uneven phenomenon of lithium-carbon compounds during battery charge and discharge processes, laying the foundation for improvements in lithium battery performance. Its Energy-Resolved Neutron Imaging Spectrometer (ERNI) has advantages such as deep penetration and sensitivity to light elements, enabling precise measurements of battery reaction mechanisms and uneven reaction levels, which assist in battery design optimization and performance enhancement.

In the future, ERNI will play a significant role in areas such as new energy, new materials, and high-end equipment manufacturing, while also being applied to specialized research fields like cultural heritage, archaeology, plant physiology, geology, and deep-sea studies.

Currently, the CSNS has established partnerships with many domestic battery companies and has achieved significant results in aviation, aerospace, high-speed rail, ships, and new energy sectors. For example, it has provided a research platform for aircraft airworthiness certification in the aviation and aerospace industry and offered data support for improving the safety and performance of high-speed rail.

中国散裂中子源已经完成1700多项用户实验课题

位于东莞松山湖的中国散裂中子源是首个落地粤港澳大湾区的国家重大科技基础设施,也是我国首台、世界第四台脉冲式散裂中子源。截至目前,中国散裂中子源的累计注册用户达7117户,其中1/4来自粤港澳大湾区,已完成1700多项用户实验课题,在航空航天、高铁船舶、新能源、信息材料等重点领域,取得了一批重要科学成果。

中国散裂中子源如同“超级显微镜”,利用中子穿透能力研究物质材料内部微观结构和运动。在新能源汽车领域,它首次发现了电池充放电过程中碳锂化合物的不均匀现象,为锂电池性能改进奠定基础。其能量分辨中子成像谱仪(ERNI)具有深穿透、轻元素灵敏等优势,能精确测量电池反应机理和不均匀反应程度,助力电池设计优化和性能提升。

未来,ERNI将在新能源、新材料、高端装备制造等领域发挥重要作用,同时应用于文化遗产和考古、植物生理学、地质、深海等特色研究领域。

目前,中国散裂中子源已与全国多家电池类企业建立合作关系,并在航空航天、高铁船舶、新能源等领域取得重要成果。例如,在航空航天领域为飞机适航论证提供研究平台,在交通领域为高铁安全性和性能提速提供数据支持。
