As 2024 unfolds, the global economy's gradual recoveryisreflected in the vibrant smartphone consumer market.
Recent data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology reveals a 6.5% year-on-year growth in the country's smartphone shipments in 2023, with 5G smartphones leading the surge with an impressive 82.8% market share.
On January 25th, the International Data Corporation (IDC) released its latest quarterly tracking report, indicating that in the fourth quarter of 2023, China's smartphone market experienced a shipment of approximately 73.63 million units, a year-on-year increase of 1.2%. This marks the first rebound in the Chinese smartphone market after ten consecutive quarters of decline.
According to the 2023 smartphone shipment figures for China released on January 26th by Canalys, a market analyst firm, Apple secured the top position in annual shipments for the first time in the Chinese mainland, with a marginal 1% year-on-year increase.
The competition among domestic smartphonebrandsintensified, with vivo as the largest seller in 2023. OPPO and Honor demonstrated neck-and-neck performance, while Xiaomi maintained fifth position with a 13% market share. Huawei's annual market share in China surged from 8% in 2022 to 12% in 2023, accompanied by a 48% year-on-year increase in shipments, showing strong growth momentum. This achievement signifies Huawei's gradual recovery in the market, continually expanding its influence in the Chinese mainland market.
According to Canalys' research analyst, Huawei has become the most prominent dark horse in the fourth quarter of 2023. The Mate 60 Series, with its in-house Kirin chip and innovative features such as satellite calling, has become the leading model driving Huawei's shipment recovery.
In the global smartphone market, AI has become an indispensable keyword. Despite facing international pressure and challenges, Huawei, leveraging its robust research and development capabilities and brand influence, still holds a significant position in China's high-end smartphone market. This success is attributed to Huawei's continuous substantial investment in technological research and development as well as product innovation to consistently introduce new products with differentiating competitive advantages.
The competition among other domestic brands such as Xiaomi, OPPO, andvivois particularly fierce. Xiaomi's continuous introduction of new products, coupled with outstanding cost performance and technological innovation, has garnered favor among customers. OPPO and vivo, on the other hand, solidified their market shares with the strong sales of the R series and X series respectively.
IDC anticipates that the high-end (priced above $600) and low-end (priced between $100 to $200) segments of China’s smartphone market will experience growth in the coming years.
Simultaneously, the rapid expansion of the foldable smartphone market injects new vitality into the Chinese mobile industry. IDC predicts that by 2024, the Chinese mainland's foldable smartphone shipments will approach 10 million units, marking a year-on-year growth of 53.2%. As major components like hinges and screens witness a decline in costs, prices of foldable products are expected to decrease, attracting a broader consumer base. This trend signifies that foldable phones are poised to become an influential force in the market.
