On January 20th, as it is also the weekend, the tourism market welcomed the first travel peak of the winter holiday.

It is reported that, influenced by the return of outbound tourism after a four-year hiatus and the increasing popularity of long-distance domestic travel, the number of air tours during winter vacation has increased significantly, with family trips as the main force of winter travel this year.

Educational travel market recovering rapidly

According to the "School Calendar" issued by the Department of Education of Guangzhou Province, primary and secondary schools in Guangzhou will have their winter break starting on January 22nd, 2024. Travel agencies have indicated that this period is highly anticipated as a peak season for tourism.

At 8:30 am, a tour group heading to Mohe Arctic Village in Heilongjiang Province gathered at Terminal 2 of Guangzhou Baiyun Airport. According to the travel agency, nearly 90% of this group consists of families with children.

Mr. Huang, who joined the tour with his family of four, mentioned that besides taking his 11-year-old and 9-year-old kids to enjoy the snowscape in the northeast, he also values the educational arrangements during the trip. "For example, at the Wudalianchi Scenic Area Museum, we can learn about world volcanoes and geologies, getting close to the mythical 'reindeer' and the red-crowned cranes at the Zhalong Wetland. I've heard that we can also visit the Aihui Ancient City and the Aihui Exhibition Hall of History in Heihe, a city near Russia."

The travel agency further said that the "Zhiqu Camp" brand, focusing on family trips, has launched various routes from now on, attracting wide attention with destinations including Snow Village in Northeast China, Guizhou's FAST Telescope, and the Beijing Palace Museum with exciting themed activities for the families. The increasing number of large-scale interprovincial educational trips during the winter break indicates the accelerated recovery of the educational travel market.

Overseas trips with children during winter break increased

According to statistics, since the release of the third batch of approved outbound travel groups by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in August 2023, the proportion of families with children participating in outbound tourism has been increasing month by month, from the end of summer vacation to the Golden Week holiday in 2023, and now to the winter break in 2024.

After a four-year hiatus, parents are once again travelling with their children during the winter break. What are their travel preferences?

It is learned that long-distance outbound tourism is becoming increasingly popular, with more family trips lasting 9-12 days to destinations such as Europe, Australia and New Zealand, the Middle East, and Africa.

It is worth mentioning that with the return of outbound travel, the cruise tourism industry also sees its revival during the winter break travel peak. In the coming week, the Shenzhen-based Zhongshang Yidun Cruise will embark on an 8-day journey to Ha Long Bay and Da Nang in Vietnam, while the Hong Kong-based Resorts World One Cruise will start its journey to Manila and Boracay Island in the Philippines.

According to data from travel agencies, as the winter break started, a significant number of minors can be seen in cruise tours, with parent-child families making up about 20% of the total number of passengers.
