On December 5th, the 20th Guangzhou International Documentary Film Festival hosted the "Global Documentary Industry Summit" as part of its thematic forum.
Experts from the global documentary industry engaged in a roundtable discussion, expressing their views on global documentary trends, local expressions in China, and the rise of Asian content. The event was moderated by Paul Lewis, the Director of the World Congress of Science and Factual Producers (WCSFP).
Amidst economic development, political shifts, and industry consolidation, the global documentary industry faces uncertainties and challenges. Han Yun, Director of the Youku Documentary Channel, emphasized the necessity for innovation as the only solution to overcome these challenges. Han stressed the importance of creating content that current viewers prefer and are willing to pay for.
BBC Studios, focusing on international collaboration, sees the creation of cross-border alliances as a key to industry innovation. Thomas Scott, Head of Development, International & Co-Production at BBC Studios, highlighted their emphasis on collaborative projects with teams from different channels and regions, including partnerships with teams from China.
"We have established a new alliance for documentary production, hoping to broaden the channels for documentary production and distribution. Through this process, we aim to identify new opportunities and markets," said Thomas Scott, noting the effectiveness of their collaboration with Bilibili and learning from its practices.
Han Yun believes that emerging technologies like AI can open up infinite possibilities for documentary creation. For instance, virtual production can bring unprecedented elements to documentaries, showcasing the extremes of macro or micro perspectives and ancient or futuristic worlds. According to Han, this is a focal point for Youku's documentary strategy next year. Han revealed that the company is actively incorporating AI technologies in documentary production, including digital human models and historical scene art settings empowered by AIGC.
According to Han, Youku envisions a new era for documentaries where the boundaries of documentaries continually expand through collaboration across various genres like variety shows and interactive experiences. This approach aims to provide younger audiences with a more immersive viewing experience.
