"After taking the class, I'm going to teach my friends how to 'master' smartphones," said Mrs. Yang, a senior. Previously uncertain about using her smartphone's camera, Mrs. Yang was always worried about pressing the wrong buttons. However, after attending the smartphone photography class at the "Elderly School," she now has the confidence to become a "teacher" herself.
Mrs. Yang is a participant in the Guangzhou Community Elderly Association's 2023 "Elderly School" Project. Currently, the project offers a variety of courses in local communities, covering topics such as smart devices, mental health, safety knowledge, and moral values, in districts including Nansha, Yuexiu, Liwan, Baiyun, Huangpu, and Tianhe.
During the smartphone photography class, many students brought notebooks and pens, following young instructors' guidance to "unlock" the various features of smartphone photography and photo editing. After taking the editing class, many students added background music to videos of their grandchildren, square dancing, or travels, creating their first works. Mr. Zhang, who was initially apprehensive, said after completing his work, "I edited the text and uploaded the music to the video myself."
In addition to helping seniors bridge the digital divide, the "Elderly School" also offers fraud prevention training. In easy-to-understand language, class instructors introduced nearly a hundred community seniors to 20 common scams and provided corresponding "anti-fraud tips."
In addition, the "Elderly School" invites geriatric doctors to explain precautions for managing and preventing "three highs" (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes) and organizes training on senior citizen travel and home safety conducted by professionals. Psychologists were invited to share psychological knowledge related to marriage, parent-child relationships, and parenting by grandparents with seniors.
It is reported that the Guangzhou Community Elderly Association's "Elderly School" Project will continue and use online media platforms to reach a broader audience, sharing senior training resources through various channels.
