Eating mooncakes on Mid-Autumn Festival is a tradition of the Chinese nation. Do giant pandas fancy mooncakes to celebrate the Festival? And if so, what flavor are the mooncakes for giant pandas?
At the Qinling Giant Panda Research Center in Shaanxi Province, panda keepers have prepared a special Mid-Autumn feast for Qizai, the world's only captive brown giant panda. They have stuffed bamboo leaves and chunks of carrots, Qizai's favorite, into hollow bamboo balls, allowing Qizai to eat and play at the same time.
The mooncakes for Qizai are more like the steamed bread made of corn flour, soybean flour and wheat flour moulded in a special mold, which have no stuffings. To add a sense of ceremony, the panda keepers also managed to lay out the two characters "中秋", meaning "Mid-Autumn", with the carrots. In the face of such a Mid-Autumn feast, Qizai gorged himself without any hesitation.
