A powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck Morocco on the 8th at 23:11 local time (6:11 AM, September 9th, Beijing time), leaving a trail of devastation in its wake. As of 22:00 local time on the 9th, the death toll from the earthquake had risen to 2,012, with 2,059 reported injuries, including 1,404 people in serious condition. Fortunately, according to the Chinese Ambassador to Morocco, Li Changlin, there have been no reports of Chinese citizens being harmed.
On the afternoon of September 9th, several Chinese individuals who were in Morocco at the time shared their harrowing experiences of the earthquake on social media.
One of them, a Chinese shopper known as "Coconut," was in Morocco with her mother on a shopping expedition. They were located in the ancient city of Murakush, about 70 kilometers from the earthquake's epicenter.
"At a little past 11 PM last night, I was getting ready to sleep when suddenly everything started shaking violently. It felt like the buildings were moving. Having experienced the earthquake in Nepal, I could tell that this was a significant one. Without hesitation, I grabbed my mother, packed up, and ran to the open square," Coconut recounted on the 9th.
Video footage provided by her showed a crowded square in the aftermath of the earthquake, with scenes of chaos and some buildings collapsed. "Currently, where I am, communication, power, and transportation are all still operational, and life is gradually returning to normal," she added.
Ms. Qian, who hails from Shanghai, also experienced the disaster. She and her friends were traveling in the Moroccan port city of Agadir, which is over 100 kilometers from the epicenter. She told reporters, "At the time, the local residents were very nervous and panicked, rushing out of their homes and even sleeping outdoors. This is the largest earthquake I have ever encountered."
Ms. Qian noted that no building collapsed in the earthquake, and there were no reports of casualties. Communication remained uninterrupted, and the daily routines of the people were returning to normal.
In addition, Ms. Wang, who has been living in Rabat, Morocco, for many years, assured reporters during a live call that she was safe in Rabat, which is more than 300 kilometers away from the epicenter. According to her information, this is the most severe earthquake in Morocco's history. Lucas, a Chinese tour guide who has been residing in Casablanca for many years, also stated that they were safe despite feeling the tremors. Casablanca is approximately 250 kilometers from the epicenter, and the Chinese community there remains unharmed.
Dragon TV reporter Li Jingping also experienced the earthquake. She revealed that she was jolted awake during the intense shaking. After the quake, there was a power outage, and both inside and outside the hotel, there was chaos. During the evacuation, she saw vehicles parked along the streets and people seeking refuge on sidewalks.
