In the fire-prone summer, it's time for firefighters to get busy again. But how did the fire department prevent fires a hundred years ago? 

The old site of the Guangzhou Fire Department, located on Wenming Road in Yuexiu District, was built in the 1920s and designed by the famous architect Charles Souder Paget. When it was completed, the building was the tallest of its kind in Guangzhou.     The top floor of the building was designed into a loft-style lookout post, where lookouts can overlook Guangzhou. Once a fire is detected, they can ring the alarm bell and promptly report the location of the fire. Experienced lookouts can even     pinpoint the exact location of a fire in an alley and their effectiveness comparable to a fire radar. 

Today, this 29-meter-tall building has become a historical site. As a witness to the history of urban firefighting in Guangzhou, it stands silently among high-rise buildings, reminding citizens to always pay attention to fire safety.

岭南说｜早在一百年前，广州就打造了一款“消防神器”！  

夏季火情频发，又到了消防叔叔忙碌的季节。那么百年以前，消防部门是如何防范火情的？  

位于越秀区文明路的广州市消防局旧址，建于上世纪20年代，由著名建筑大师查尔斯·伯捷设计，建成后一度是广州第一高楼。大楼顶层是一个阁楼式瞭望岗，站在上面，瞭望员可俯瞰广州城区，一旦发现火情，便可拉铃示警，同时以最快速度通报火灾地点。有经验的瞭望员，甚至可以精确说出内街小巷的具体位置，其功效堪比消防雷达。

如今，这栋29米高的消防大楼已成文物。作为广州城市消防史的见证者，它默默地矗立在高楼大厦之间，继续提醒市民时刻注意消防安全。
