Greater Bay Area showcases world-class technology with practical benefits

At the industry sci-tech achievement matchmaking session of the 2026 Greater Bay Area Science Forum, cutting-edge technologies are shedding their intimidating aura and becoming more accessible. They are not only winning world-class science and technology awards, but also finding ways to benefit the public.

At the booth of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Zheng Wenyue, a doctoral student in the laboratory of Professor Nancy Yuk-Yu IP, was introducing her team's blood test for Alzheimer's disease (AD). "With just one drop of blood, we can detect 21 blood proteins simultaneously and identify people at high risk five to 10 years before symptoms appear, with an accuracy rate of over 96%."

The technology won an award of excellence at the 48th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva. This is what it means to reach the highest levels of scientific achievement. In the past, screening for the disease involved either an uncomfortable lumbar puncture to collect cerebrospinal fluid or costly and complicated PET scans. Now, the process can be reduced to a single drop of blood. That is what it means to bring technology into everyday life.

For technology to truly benefit the public, it must be practical and affordable. According to Zheng, the test is now available at some clinics in Hong Kong, where around 3,000 people have been tested. Each test costs approximately 3,000 HK dollars (2,544.30 yuan). On the Chinese mainland, clinical trials have also been conducted at nine centers, including Beijing Tiantan Hospital.

At the booth of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, the team led by Academician Tang Ben Zhong presented another example of technology that reaches both the highest levels of innovation and practical application: aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials.

Their scientific significance lies in the fact that this is a cutting-edge field of research pioneered and led by Chinese scientists on the global stage, with the potential to break through the physical limits of traditional solar energy utilization. According to the team, conventional solar panels can capture only a limited range of wavelengths, leaving much of the sun's energy unused. This breakthrough in foundational materials makes it possible to "slice up" sunlight and put different parts to use. Ultraviolet light is converted into visible light for electricity generation; green light, which most crops cannot absorb, is converted into red light to provide plants with additional light; and near-infrared light is converted into thermal energy for seawater desalination.

The practical value lies in taking the technology beyond the laboratory and putting it to work in the fields. Applied in dozens of mu of tomato fields in Yunnan Province, the new material has increased yields by 10% to 20%, generating an additional 2,000 to 3,000 yuan in income per mu. The benefits are tangible gains that go directly into farmers' pockets.
