Along the coastline of Raoping County in Chaozhou, rows of fish breeding ponds shimmer in the sunlight, with young spotted sea bass swimming through the water. During a recent visit to Chaozhou, reporters learned that despite Guangdong's large-scale spotted sea bass farming industry, the province had long lacked a large-scale breeding facility for high-quality sea bass fry. Raoping has now filled this gap in the province's aquaculture industry.
Spotted sea bass is one of Guangdong's leading marine aquaculture species, yet the province has long struggled with a shortage of locally produced fry. Zhao Chao, an Associate Researcher at the South China Sea Fisheries Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences (SCSFRI, CAFS) and deputy general manager for technology at Raoping Wanjia Aquiculture Production Co., Ltd., explained the challenge: "In the past, we couldn't produce fertilized spotted sea bass eggs in Guangdong until December or even January. By then, competitors had already captured the market." Compounding the problem was the absence of large-scale breeding facilities for high-quality spotted sea bass fry in the province, leaving farmers facing high costs, significant risks and inconsistent fish quality.

A turning point for the industry's commercial development came in Raoping, where local authorities made breakthroughs in seed breeding a priority, regarding high-quality fry as the "chips" powering marine ranching. Since the Wanjia Provincial-level Spotted Sea Bass Breeding Farm, built with a total investment of 80 million yuan, began operations, it has produced more than 130 million spotted sea bass fry, ending the province's long-standing lack of access to locally produced fry on a commercial scale.
Closer collaboration among industries, universities and research institutions is transforming spotted sea bass breeding. Wanjia Aquiculture Production and the SCSFRI, CAFS jointly established a provincial collaborative innovation center for marine engineering technology, achieving breakthroughs in key techniques such as conservation of original breeding stocks and broodstock cultivation. These advances have boosted the local supply of spotted sea bass fry by 55%. Supported by a provincial doctoral research workstation, the team applied genomic selection breeding technology to develop a new spotted sea bass strain, "Nanrao No. 1", which grows 18.2% faster and has a 21.6% higher survival rate. The team also successfully developed a genomic breeding chip named "Sea Bass No. 1".
Another notable breakthrough has been the ability to bring forward the breeding season. According to Zhao, the team developed an innovative gradient cooling technique to regulate water temperatures, advancing the spawning season of spotted sea bass broodstock by one month."Previously, we had to wait until December or later. Now we can produce eggs and raise fry as early as the beginning of October, giving us a head start in the market," he said. The breeding ponds are now also being used more efficiently to raise fry of other species, including black scrapers and groupers, increasing resource utilization by 50%.
