On July 19th this year, the Cantonese Opera Makeup and Photography Experience Studio of the Guangzhou Cantonese Opera Theatre, the city's first such facility created by a professional state-owned troupe, officially opened at the Hung Sin Nui Grand Theater. A reporter who tried the experience found that the whole process—from makeup application, head wrapping, putting on costumes, and being strapped into the stage armor known as "Da Kao", to learning stage movements and posing for photos—took a full five hours.

The workshop offers a one-stop service provided by experienced makeup artists and costume stylists. Participants can choose costumes from classic plays such as "Zhaojun Departs for the Frontier" and "The Flower Princess," covering four main role types: huadan (vivacious young female role), daomadan (female warrior role), xiaosheng (young male lead role) and wusheng (martial arts male role). During the session, a senior makeup artist revealed the characteristics of Cantonese opera makeup: a thick, white foundation base; full application of bright red rouge to the eye sockets, paired with high, thick, black, sword-like eyebrows; and elaborate red-and-gold headdresses adorned with abundant gold powder. The chief costume stylist said that Cantonese opera costumes favor highly saturated colors such as bright red and gold, using large quantities of gold and silver threads and sequins, with intricate and ornate patterns to catch the light effectively during early open-air performances. During the experience, Li Jiayi, a winner of the Plum Performance Award, also gave hands-on instruction in basic Cantonese opera performance techniques, including the "Four Skills and Five Methods."

In addition, Guangzhou has linked several Cantonese opera landmarks into a tour route. The Hung Sin-nui Arts Centre next to the workshop is open to the public free of charge and features a small theater and photo exhibition. Guangdong's Bahe Guild Hall, located on Enning Road in Liwan District, is a Cantonese opera guild organization and is now open to the public as a protected cultural heritage site in Liwan District. The nearby Cantonese Opera Art Museum houses the Guangfu Theatrical stage, which is scheduled to stage 1,000 Cantonese opera and music performances this year, all free of charge.
