From May 14th to 16th, Guangdong Polytechnic of Water Resources and Electric Engineering welcomed a group of special visitors. Abigail Shoniwa, Ambassador of Zimbabwe to China, and Counselor Garikai Kashitiku led a delegation to the college to further deepen bilateral educational exchanges and cooperation.

Shoniwa's visit was mainly aimed at conducting an on-site review of the progress of the GPWE-Mutare Poly College of Engineering and Technology project, jointly developed by the college and Mutare Polytechnic in Zimbabwe under the framework of the "Future of Africa" China-Africa Vocational Education Cooperation Plan.

The project adopts a "1.5+1+0.5" joint training model. Under the arrangement, students study in Zimbabwe for 1.5 years, spend one year in Guangdong, and then return to Zimbabwe for another 0.5 years. Upon completion of the project, they will receive diplomas from both countries.

The first group of 30 Zimbabwean students enrolled in the fall of 2025, majoring in Water Conservancy Project and Power Supply and Application Technology. They are scheduled to return to Zimbabwe this July for internships and employment.

Shoniwa said Zimbabwe, like many other countries, is being affected by climate change. "China has very advanced experience and technologies in these areas. It is a rare opportunity for our nationals to come here and receive training in water resources and electric engineering," she said.

Shoniwa also expressed high expectations for the students' future development. "After studying advanced water resources and electric power technologies in China, these students will certainly be highly welcomed when they return to Zimbabwe. In particular, as they can speak Chinese and understand Chinese culture, they will have greater opportunities to work for Chinese-funded enterprises in Zimbabwe," she said.
