In the first two months of 2026, Guangdong generated 16.86 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of nuclear power, ranking first nationwide. The province has maintained its leading position in China's nuclear power sector through both scale and innovation.

Guangdong is home to the country's most concentrated cluster of nuclear power projects and boasts the largest installed capacity in operation and under construction. By the end of 2025, the province's installed nuclear power capacity had reached 16.18 million kilowatts, accounting for about 25.8% of China's total installed nuclear power capacity. As the cradle of China's commercial nuclear power industry, the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station, located in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area(GBA), has operated safely for 32 years. The plant has cumulatively supplied more than 330 billion kWh of electricity to Hong Kong, accounting for roughly one-quarter of Hong Kong's total electricity consumption. In April this year, Unit 1 of the Taipingling nuclear power plant, the first Hualong One nuclear unit in the GBA, officially began commercial operation. The unit is expected to generate more than 9 billion kWh of electricity annually, enough to meet the yearly power demand of around one million residents. Meanwhile, construction of new projects is advancing at full speed, with four units at the Lufeng nuclear power plant among those approved and currently under construction.
Guangdong's continued leadership in nuclear power also stems from its drive for independent innovation. In 2025,CGN Power Co., Ltd. accelerated the development of the China Southern Atomic Energy Science and Technology Innovation Center, a major hub for original advanced nuclear technologies, supporting further upgrades of Hualong One and the research and development of advanced reactor types. Currently, CGN Power has 19 nuclear power units under construction, 17 of which adopt Hualong One, China's independently developed third-generation nuclear technology. With the commissioning of Taipingling Unit 1, Hualong One has achieved the leap from "demonstration" to "large-scale application." Guangdong has now formed a full industrial chain covering nuclear plant design, equipment manufacturing, construction, and operation.
