China's pet economy expands overseas with smart and sustainable innovation

On May 4th, the third phase of the 139th China Import and Export Fair (Canton Fair) was underway in Guangzhou. Centered on the theme of "Better Life," the Pet Products zone brought together a group of Chinese companies, including Hangzhou Tianyuan Pet Products Co., Ltd. and Guangdong Boyu Group Co., Ltd., to showcase their latest achievements in smart technology, brand building, and eco-friendly innovation. According to the 2026 China Pet Industry White Paper, China's urban pet consumption market reached 312.6 billion yuan in 2025 and is expected to grow to 405 billion yuan by 2028, reflecting a trend in which the growth in pet numbers is slowing while spending is accelerating. Amid structural changes in the global pet economy, Chinese enterprises are expanding into untapped overseas opportunities through technological innovation and green concepts.

Smart devices have become a highlight of the exhibition area. The smart cat litter box developed by Hangzhou Tianyuan can be controlled remotely via a mobile phone, attracting overseas buyers from Europe, the United States, Japan, and other markets. "Electronic litter boxes free pet owners' hands while keeping things clean and hygienic, so customers like them very much," Zhu Guohao, the company's foreign trade manager, told reporters. The company reportedly set up its pet industry R&D team as early as 2008. Today, it operates factories in China, Cambodia, Vietnam, and the United States, giving it full-chain supply capabilities from design and R&D to manufacturing.

As consumers become more environmentally conscious, "sustainable pet care" is emerging as a new selling point for pet products. At the booth of Jiangsu Zhenghao Pet Products Co., Ltd., booth representative Shi Zhibo demonstrated a smart deodorizing mixed cat litter, whose natural activated carbon and bio-enzyme technology instantly absorbed pungent odors. "This product is tailored for people who pursue sustainable pet care. Two European companies have already signed trial orders worth more than 200,000 U.S.dollars," Shi said. He believes that China's pet products industry already accounts for a relatively large share of the global market and is becoming less dependent on any single market year by year. "In the future, products will place greater emphasis on practicality and innovation," he said.
