During the May Day holiday, on the streets of Shunde, Foshan, a tourist from Chongqing, a Xiaohongshu user whose screen name "Doudouliyoutang" means "there's candy in the pocket," was about to begin a culinary trip with her two children when the telescopic handle of her suitcase suddenly snapped and jammed. At a loss, she went to the Left Luggage Service Point at Leung Kau Kui Library. The staff not only helped her register for free luggage storage on the spot, but a security guard on duty also took the initiative to fetch some tools, crouched down on the floor, and worked on the suitcase until the handle was soon functioning normally again.

Afterwards, she wrote in a thank-you note, "They did not brush me off because I was an out-of-town visitor, nor did they treat me with indifference because the storage service was free." The reason this sentence touched so many people is that it speaks to a shared experience in everyday travel. Too often, people have grown used to the default logic that "free of charge" means "free of liability," or that matters outside one's remit need not be handled. That is why, when a security guard voluntarily helped repair a suitcase that had nothing to do with his official duties, this unexpected act of kindness felt especially moving.

During the National Day holiday in 2025, the Shunde District government compound opened its gates to visitors, providing 1,200 free parking spaces, while the government canteen offered simple meals at 20 yuan each. "Eating and parking at the government compound" thus became a real convenience that tourists could actually enjoy. During the May Day holiday in 2026, Foshan opened more than 31,000 free parking spaces at government offices and public institutions across the city. In 2026, after Mo's Chicken Hot Pot in Chencun Town went viral following online restaurant visits, the area was hit by an average daily influx of 3,000 customers. In response, local authorities leveled idle land overnight to build a temporary parking lot, repaired nearby access roads, and launched a food map to help disperse visitor flows. The Shunde Chefs Association also sent professional chefs to the restaurant to provide hands-on support.
These small acts of kindness during the holiday may not have come with great fanfare, but they addressed visitors' most immediate needs concretely. They also allowed everyone who came to Shunde to truly feel the city's sincerity and warmth.
