On March 25th, Guangzhou officially kicked off construction of its second airport in Foshan's Gaoming District. As a key component of the world-class airport cluster in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area(GBA), the project involves a total investment of 41.808 billion yuan. It is scheduled for completion in 2030, aiming to fundamentally rebalance aviation resources in the GBA, which are currently stronger in the east than in the west.

The new airport is positioned as a civil aviation hub. The first phase of the project will feature two widely spaced parallel runways, a terminal building covering approximately 260,000 square meters, and 94 aircraft stands. Upon completion, the airport is expected to handle more than 30 million passengers annually, along with 500,000 metric tons of cargo and mail, and 260,000 aircraft movements. Located in Foshan's Gaoming District, the geographical center of Foshan, Zhaoqing, Jiangmen, and Yunfu, the new airport is expected to directly serve a population of over 20 million, effectively addressing the shortage of aviation services on the west bank of the Pearl River.

To enable efficient multimodal transport, the new airport will be connected to several high-speed and intercity railways, including the Guangzhou-Zhanjiang, Shenzhen-Nanning, and Zhuhai-Zhaoqing lines to form a "five-horizontal and four-vertical" highway and expressway network. Through an integrated transport hub, passengers will be able to complete check-in and transfer seamlessly between air and rail services on the same floor. In terms of functional positioning, the new airport will complement Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. Baiyun will focus on its global route network, while the new airport will adopt a differentiated development strategy, jointly fortifying Guangzhou's status as an international aviation transport focal point.

In design, the terminal incorporates elements of Foshan's cultural heritage, such as the Ancestral Temple, dragon boats, and lion dance, featuring a six-concourse configuration and interlaced arched roofs that symbolize "a thousand loongs racing forward." The project is designed in line with the standards of being "safe, green, smart, and people-oriented," integrating technologies such as 5G and AI to build an autonomous airport while embedding the carbon neutrality principle throughout. As airport-based industries accelerate agglomeration, this modern airport will serve as a new engine driving high-quality economic development on the west bank of the Pearl River.
