The BASF (Guangdong) Integrated Site Grand Opening Ceremony was held on Donghai Island, Zhanjiang, on March 26th. Huang Kunming, Party Secretary of Guangdong, and Guangdong Governor Meng Fanli, alongside Dr. Martin Brudermüller, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE, jointly started the plant. This marks the official entry into full operation for China's first wholly foreign-owned large-scale petrochemical Verbund project. Chinese Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao and Germany's Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Katharina Reiche delivered video speeches to witness this milestone.

As the largest single investment project by a German enterprise in China, the BASF Zhanjiang Verbund Site represents a total investment of approximately 8.7 billion euros and covers about 4 square kilometers. Independently built and operated by BASF, it is the first case of a wholly foreign-owned project in China's heavy chemical industry and a landmark national foreign investment project. The site now comprises 18 units and 32 production lines. It produces over 70 types of basic chemicals, intermediates, and specialty chemicals, officially becoming BASF's 7th Verbund site globally and its third largest after Ludwigshafen, Germany, and Antwerp, Belgium.

Green sustainability is the project's most defining feature. The core ethylene complex, with an annual capacity of 1 million metric tons of ethylene, is the world's first of its kind to have its primary compressor driven 100% by renewable energy. Through Verbund integration, process innovation, and a full green power supply, its CO2 emissions are 50% lower than traditional petrochemical bases, setting a new standard for low-carbon transformation in the global chemical industry. Currently, the site employs over 2,000 people, with products serving key sectors such as transportation, electronics, pharmaceuticals, home care, and personal care.
Dr. Martin Brudermüller stated that completing the project on time and within budget demonstrates BASF's firm confidence in the long-term development of China, the world's largest chemical market. The site will strictly implement the "produce locally for the local market" strategy, with most products directly supplied to China. This will not only reduce domestic reliance on high-end chemical imports but also provide stable, high-quality raw material support for the upgrading of downstream industries like automotive and electronics.

Since its announcement in 2018, the BASF Zhanjiang Verbund Site has accumulated an investment of over 60 billion yuan. Its full operation further consolidates BASF's market position after more than 140 years in China. Furthermore, it will help Guangdong accelerate the creation of a world-class green petrochemical cluster and inject strong momentum into building a modern industrial system. Moving forward, BASF will continue to work with partners to drive innovation and transformation in the chemical industry to achieve high-quality development.
