Shantou's 'Yingge Girl' takes center stage in HK with dream of teaching the world to dance

On February 17th, the first day of the Chinese New Year, drums and gongs thundered through the streets of Tsim Sha Tsui in Hong Kong. At the International Chinese New Year Night Parade, a 6-year-old girl at the center of the parade lineup, holding mini Yingge sticks and sporting a neat bun hairstyle, caught everyone's eye. She is Zhuang Enqi, from Guiyu Town, Chaoyang District, Shantou, Guangdong. Despite her small stature, her dance moves were sharp and spirited. Following the powerful drumbeats, she swung her sticks with confidence and childlike vigor, drawing rounds of applause and cheers from residents and tourists lining the streets, and instantly filling Hong Kong with Chinese New Year spirit.

"I'm very happy to perform in Hong Kong. I get to see performances from different countries and regions, and the float parade too. I'm really curious about those," she said. In her bag, besides her performance costume, there were several pairs of mini Yingge sticks, special gifts she prepared for children from Hong Kong and around the world.

"Dancing at home is for my grandparents and villagers, and it's lively. Dancing in Hong Kong means I can play with kids from different countries and regions, and it's even more lively," she shared. She harbors an even bigger wish: "I want to teach Yingge dance to children all over the world."

This 6-year-old girl has now mastered nearly 10 sets of Yingge dance moves and even created one of her own. Since unexpectedly going viral in 2024, she has performed on increasingly larger stages. At the end of 2024, she was invited to perform in Singapore, bringing Yingge dance abroad. During the 2025 Chinese New Year, she appeared on the stages of the Greater Bay Area Spring Festival Gala and the China Intangible Cultural Heritage Spring Festival Gala.
