Intangible cultural heritage 'Lion Dance' bridges generations in Foshan community

On December 27th, the "Lingnan Intangible Cultural Heritage in Communities" initiative arrived in the Laurel House community in Foshan, bringing the charm of the tradition to the doorsteps of local residents.

Amid the increasingly frequent beats of drums and gongs, two brightly colored "Xingshi" (Awakened Lions) emerged from the entrance. They leaped into the crowd to the rhythm of cheerful drumbeats, alternating between a majestic, commanding presence and an adorable, playful demeanor, drawing thunderous applause from the audience.

The performance featured Zhao Weibin, a national-level representative bearers and practitioners of the Guangdong Lion Dance and the fifth-generation descendant of the "Zhao Heritage Atelier." Zhao and his team performed the traditional "dotting the eyes" and "plucking the greens" ceremonies, showcasing the power and vigor of the Lingnan Lion Dance.

During the performance, Zhao shared the historical origins, cultural significance, and performance features of the Lingnan Lion Dance with the audience. He explained that lion dancing in China is generally divided into "Southern Lion" and "Northern Lion" styles, roughly separated by the Yangtze River. While the Northern style emphasizes realism and agility, the Southern style, rooted in Guangdong and dating back nearly 2,000 years to the Han Dynasty, focuses on horse stance and powerful expression.

"The dance involves high-difficulty maneuvers on the ground or atop high poles, such as soaring, shifting, dodging, pouncing, whirling, and leaping, " Zhao explained while demonstrating. "These movements are used to interpret the eight states of the lion including joy, anger, sorrow, happiness, movement, stillness, shock, and suspicion." He then introduced the "Lion Dance Exercise," a simplified routine consisting of four steps, namely Bai Shi, Gao Shi, Ping Shi, and Pao Shi, and demonstrated each step in synchronization with specific drum rhythms.

Inspired by the rhythmic beats, residents of all ages eagerly donned the heavy lion heads to practice the traditional footwork. In that moment, the drumbeat served as more than just a rhythm, it became a cultural bridge connecting the participants to a millennia-old legacy.
