On April 29th, the second day of the 31st "Wuyang Cup" National Chess Championship Qualifiers unfolded at Guangzhou Cultural Park in Liwan District. Wang Yubo from Beijing Chess Academy maintained his lead with 10 points after securing one win and two draws in rounds 4-6. The final qualifier round for the Masters Group will take place on the morning of April 30th, with the top 24 advancing to the semi-finals on May 6th. Ultimately, six finalists will compete against the champions group.
The tournament's unique atmosphere, passionate local fans, and Lingnan cultural flair captivated participants. Hang Ning, the 2023 National Mind Games women's single youth champion in chess contest, admitted feeling "nervous yet thrilled" in her debut. Though her slim chances of advancing faded after a draw, she valued the rare opportunity to learn from top male players. She felt Guangzhou's chess culture to be down-to-earth, and praised the city's culinary delights, particularly roast goose.
Grandmaster Zuo Wenjing, also a first-time "Wuyang Cup" contender, was enthralled by the live move commentary and public demonstration boards. She has followed this tournament since childhood, lingering post-match to observe games. Jiangsu's Liu Zijian, who studied "Wuyang Cup" chess game records as a youth, marveled at the event's historic legacy.
Wu Jinyong, the sole victor on the central stage on the evening of the 29th, could hardly contain his excitement, stating that the live audience fueled his desire to fight. When discussing regional differences in chess styles, he remarked that the southern approach prioritizes steady control, while the northern style emphasizes aggressive tactics. He expressed eagerness to face his idol, Xu Yinchuan, in future matches.
Like Hang Ning, both Zuo and Wu savored Liwan's cuisine. Zuo indulged in her favorite Cantonese dim sum, especially rice noodle rolls, while Wu, visiting Guangzhou for the first time, raved about roast goose and shrimp dumplings.
