On January 31st local time, the Hauptwache Square in the heart of Frankfurt was bustling with people. The Ximen Yingge Dance Team from Chaoyang, Shantou, Guangdong, delivered a powerful and majestic opening performance, kicking off the inaugural Frankfurt Spring Festival Fair.
The team's unique "male-female Yingge dance-off" allowed international audiences to experience up close the grandeur and vigor of this traditional Chinese dance, often dubbed the "Chinese Warrior Dance." Notably, this marked the first-ever overseas performance of the Lingnan women's Yingge Dance! Before the official start of the fair, the performers had already begun performing on the streets, their energetic movements and traditional batons drawing many onlookers.
"I really enjoy this dance with painted faces. Watching the Yingge Dance is incredibly captivating. The rhythm of the music is full of vitality!" said Michael Borchmann, a local German resident. Borchmann, who has visited China 16 times and celebrated the Chinese New Year for ten years, was no stranger to the holiday. Upon learning about the Frankfurt Spring Festival Fair, he made a point to attend.
In addition to the Yingge Dance, the fair featured a variety of traditional performances, including dragon and lion dances, and Ansai's waist drums, as well as demonstrations of traditional Chinese crafts like paper-cutting, clay sculpting, and sugar painting. These activities collectively conveyed the rich "festive spirit" of the Chinese New Year.
Wu Pengfei, the Deputy Consul General of the Chinese Consulate General in Frankfurt (Germany), expressed his hope that the Spring Festival Fair would become an annual tradition in Frankfurt, providing overseas Chinese with a special way to celebrate the holiday. Li Aping, the chairman of the Verein der Überseechinesen in Deutschland ("German Chinese Association"), added, "In the first Spring Festival following its successful application for UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status, we are eager to share the festive and auspicious atmosphere of the Chinese New Year with our international friends!"
On the first day of the Chinese New Year, the Ximen Yingge Team had already created a sensation in Hanau, Germany, Sparking a "Lingnan Cultural Storm." Their European tour also included visits to cities such as Paris and Lyon.
