According to data previously released by the Chilean Fruit Exporters Association, the 2024-2025 season's Chilean cherry production is set to reach a record high, with expected exports increasing by 50% over the previous season, reaching 124.5 million boxes (5 kilograms each box), for a total global export volume of approximately 620,000 tons. In the market of Guangzhou, where JJJ-grade Chilean cherries used to cost nearly 100 yuan per pound, the price this year has dropped to 26.9 yuan per pound. The once expensive fruit during the Spring Festival is now affordable, shedding its elite label.
At Guangzhou's Orient Plaza Aeon supermarket, JJ-grade cherries are priced at 149 yuan for 2.5 kilograms, about 29.8 yuan per pound; JJJ-grade at 169 yuan for 2.5 kilograms, about 33.8 yuan per pound. With more Chilean cherries expected to hit the market, the supermarket has launched a "cherry pre-sale," and JJJ-grade Chilean cherries can be as low as 26.9 yuan per pound with a coupon.
Online platforms also feature cherries as a main fruit and a traffic-generating hit. Meituan Xiaoxiang Supermarket and Freshippo's JJJ-grade Chilean cherries are priced at 139 yuan for 2.5kg and 149 yuan for 2.5kg, respectively. Sam's Club cherries are a hot-selling item, with the app showing many popular sizes "restocking." In comparison, small-package cherries at fruit stores are more expensive; for example, a 250-gram package of JJ-grade Chilean cherries at Pagoda costs 25.9 yuan.
Multiple supermarket managers have stated that this year, the prices of cherries of all grades have generally decreased by at least one-third compared to last year, with JJJ-grade Chilean cherries priced at about half of last year's cost. The attractive prices have boosted sales, with Yonghui Supermarket seeing a 26% year-on-year increase in cherry sales, and group purchases of cherries in community owner groups becoming a popular topic.
Why are the prices of cherries lower this year than in previous years? A relevant person in charge from Yonghui Supermarket stated that the first reason is the high production of cherries in Chile, the main supplying country. The second reason is that this year's Spring Festival is earlier than in previous years, which further stimulates market demand. "The Chinese market mainly consumes cherries concentratedly before the Spring Festival, and the demand drops sharply after the festival. Therefore, foreign merchants will concentrate on shipping to China before the festival, and the prices will also become more favorable."
