On December 20th, Macao will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its return to the motherland China. Over these 25 years, an increasing number of Macao residents have come to the mainland for greater development opportunities, and many young people born and raised on the mainland have expanded their life horizons in Macao, becoming "New Macao Residents." Director Liu Changmei, the president of the Macao Urban Culture Promotion Association, is one of them.
Liu Changmei, who grew up in Heilongjiang, has always been passionate about the media industry. In 2008, she fulfilled her dream of being admitted to the Communication University of Zhejiang. Upon graduation, Liu realized that with the rapid development of mobile internet, the media ecosystem was undergoing dramatic changes. What else could she do in this new era? By a stroke of luck, she decided to apply for a graduate program at the Macao University of Science and Technology, seeking new opportunities in Macao.
When it comes to Macao's cultural industry, people from the Chinese mainland might only think of tourism and gambling. "Some say Macao is a 'cultural desert,' but to me, a desert is also soil," Liu said, implying that she could be a "pioneer." Liu's "new soil" is the cultural and artistic industry. As early as 2012, Liu participated as a volunteer in that year's Macao International Movie Festival (MIMF). Six years later, at the 10th MIMF, Liu had become the chief director.
The successful hosting of the 10th MIMF made Liu well-known in Macao's film field. Since then, she has successively served as the chief director of the opening ceremony of the World Film Industry Conference, the chief director of the award ceremony of the Aollywood Five Continents Film Festival, and the chief director of the 12th MIMF.
In the process of deeply participating in the development of Macao's film industry, Liu found that "Macao has the beauty and mystery of the East, as well as the charm and characteristics of Portugal, but it has never become a fertile land for the growth of the film industry." she decided to establish C-Color CultureEntertainment,"Although we are a small and micro enterprise, i hope to use my professional expertise to let more people understand Macao's unique culture, introduce the mainland's rich media culture and abundant resource platforms into Macao, build a two-way cultural exchange channel between Macao and the mainland, and I look forward to becoming a 'little bridge' connecting Macao and the mainland."
During her ten years living and working in Macao, Liu Changmei has experienced its increasingly rich cultural atmosphere. Since 2020, the Macao SAR government has successively held 10 "Macao Weeks" in Beijing, hangzhou, Nanjing, shanghai, Chengdu, Chongqing, Qingdao, tianjin, Xiamen, and Xi'an. As the director of the opening ceremony program of "Macao Week," Liu has been deeply involved.
This year's "Macao Week" brought a variety of Macao's characteristic programs, such as folk dances, portuguese songs, English songs, and Cantonese songs, to the mainland audience, attracting 6 million visitors. This directly stimulated the enthusiasm of mainland tourists to visit Macao. It is reported that from January to July, 13.72 million mainland tourists visited Macao, among which the number of tourists from Beijing, Zhejiang, sichuan, shanghai, Jiangsu, and Fujian has increased significantly compared to the same period last year.
Besides, the influence of mainland culture in Macao is also continuously increasing. "Macao audiences are becoming more and more familiar with mainland films, tV shows, and variety programs. Unlike before, when everyone was more eager to go to Hong Kong, the mainland's influence is now growing larger and larger in popular culture."
In Liu's view, although Macao is a small lotus treasure land, Its cultural industry potential is huge. "For example, there are many concerts in Macao, and mainland audiences often come specially to watch concerts. This greatly promotes Macao's cultural tourism industry." in addition, the country is also vigorously enhancing Macao's role in the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. In November, the National Immigration Administration issued new regulations: from next year, residents with household registration and residence permit holders in the Guangdong-Macao in-depth cooperation zone in Hengqin can apply for a "multiple-entry" visa to Macao, allowing unlimited visits to the Macao area within one year, with each stay in Macao not exceeding 7 days. Liu believes that this will definitely make the connection between Macao and the mainland closer.
Looking back to 25 years ago, Liu, a primary school student and cultural committee member in her class, received a task: to hold a cultural activity to celebrate Macao's return to the motherland. This "important task" made the young Liu deeply remember the significant event of Macao's return. 25 years later, Liu has become a "New Macao Resident," exploring Macao while enjoying its relaxation, inclusiveness, and openness. Regarding the future of Macao's cultural industry, Liu is full of expectations: "I hope that the small but beautiful Macao can become a 'cultural exchange hub'."
