On December 14th, 2024, the Zhanjiang Offshore Ranch (Oyster) Investment Promotion and Zhanjiang Oyster Industry High-Quality Development Forum were held at the Zhanjiang Bay Laboratory. Industry experts, business leaders, and representatives from relevant organizations gathered in Zhanjiang to discuss investment cooperation in offshore ranches and exchange industry technologies.
Zhanjiang, known as the "Oyster Capital," had an oyster farming area of about 100,000 mu (approximately 66,667 acres) and a production volume of over 220,000 tons in 2023. The industry chain's total output value reached 7 billion yuan, making oyster farming a key pillar of marine fisheries and a vital livelihood for many coastal fishermen. Qi Yi, Executive Director of the Zhanjiang Oyster Industry Technology Research Institute, led a joint initiative to establish Zhanjiang as a world-renowned oyster hub and create an international brand of the best oysters.
At the event, industry experts engaged in in-depth discussions across the entire oyster industry chain, launching new oyster products from Zhanjiang and introducing southern-adapted oyster species like the "Guangfu No.1," which can be farmed in both low-salinity estuaries and high-salinity offshore waters. The successful acceptance of the "Guangfu No.1" new variety marks a new chapter for Zhanjiang oysters, with technological innovation leading the industry towards high-quality development.
The event also showcased the appeal of the sea's bounty and the allure of scientific advancement through the enjoyment of exquisite oysters. At the conclusion, sashimi-grade oysters were presented, sparking heated discussions among attendees. "Sashimi-grade oysters are not only of superior quality but also offer unique taste and nutritional value, bringing a new experience and choice to the oyster industry," said Qiu Zhiwei, Executive Director of Oysters Tribe Supply Chain Technology (Guangdong) Co., Ltd. He added that in the future, they would develop a digital sales platform for sashimi-grade oysters through the Internet of Things, create new dishes, and promote oyster culture, providing consumers with more culinary experiences.
In addition to showcasing the freshness of Zhanjiang oysters, the event also introduced innovative seaweed products, including Gracilaria changii, and related achievements. Zhanjiang's rich seaweed resources play a crucial role in the development of the marine industry. From ecological restoration to high-value-added product development, seaweed is becoming a new highlight in the drive to advance the marine economy.
