"Thank you, Chinese doctors! I feel very comfortable, I'm truly lucky!" On December 11th, local time, Hasan, a resident of the Maldives, had his cataract surgery completed in less than 20 minutes. When he learned that his surgery was the 666th operation performed by experts from Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University in the Maldives, and that the number "6" symbolizes luck in China, he was overjoyed and expressed his gratitude repeatedly.
From December 5th to 14th, the medical team from Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center visited Hulhumale Hospital in the Maldives to carry out the second phase of the fifth stage of their international medical cooperation project. On the afternoon of the 11th, at Hulhumale Hospital, Professor Lin Haotian, the Director of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center and the Director of the Eye Hospital, performed cataract surgeries on three local patients, one of whom was Hasan.
"My left eye has some issues, and I couldn't see clearly. I called the hospital to make an appointment, and then they told me there was a chance for Chinese experts to perform the surgery. I agreed right away!" Hasan told the reporter. He mentioned that he feels a special connection to China and believes that Chinese doctors are highly professional. "I have been to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong. I really like China, and Guangzhou is a wonderful city."
Lin Haotian stated, "The number '6' is considered a lucky number in Chinese culture. By marking this as the '666th surgery,' we hope that the medical team from Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center will successfully complete all surgeries in the international medical cooperation project, providing high-quality medical services to the local people and bringing light and hope to them."
In 2016 and 2017, the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center sent medical teams to begin the "Bright Journey" initiative in the Maldives. In January 2020, the China-Maldives Ophthalmic Center was officially established. As of now, seven medical teams have visited the Maldives to carry out eye health screenings and treatments, with over 6,000 patient consultations conducted.
